Well, in problems per 100 vehicles, Ford in 2007 was, um, 10th.

Having gone through many of the same cars ~2 years ago, dont go with hyundai/kia, sure their quality has improved but the engines are still shit compared to ford focus/jap compacts with regards to acceleration.

they make shitty ford suvs, also in 2007 wasnt jaguar still a ford property?

edit: And Lincoln is #3 ha.

So I guess lesson from that is, if youre gonna buy ford get something only they make (pickups, mustangs, compact sedans) or thats made by volvo and not by their other brands?

$1350, and then another $500ish on tax writeoff on the sales tax, and an insurance quirk is saving me another $300 every 6 months or so. Worked out ok.

(and remember the Vibe thing was because I could only pick from GM's shitty lineup and I wanted something with resale value in some way)

props on the 2 grand, I didn't think you'd be able to turn it around with the economy lol

and while I agree GM has a shitty lineup, my point was that you picked it out of all of them solely based on the toyota factor

Toyota has (or had last summer) a better rep than GM, so yeah it was a good selling point.

Go with the Toyota. I've owned a camery for a few years now and its been absolutely amazing. Mechanically speaking the car is as good as new. There has never been any incident where the car did not start, or had a part break.

The only problems with the car have been some minor interior issues. Things like the buttons on the radio breaking off, the stitching ripping on a panel, and a speaker screw coming loose (this is all the problems thus far). I could fix all these things myself given 1-2 hours, but I'm just waiting for a nice sunny day when I'm doing nothing better to fix that stuff.

Go with Toyota. They stand by their warranties, and with the exception of the gas pedal on the Prius they have always been spectacular on the build quality. my family has worked with Toyota and several other auto manufacturers and I can say from a manufacturing and management point of view, they are also one of the only companies to have their ducks in a line. They won't try to fuck with you if something goes wrong.

And that would have been my point. Cars all go through a variety of tests for safety. People like to taut this 'safety rating', my car is safe, because it has this or that. Sure, your car is better at this sort of accident, which is great, don't get me wrong. Limiting damage received to occupants in the most commonplace accidents is definitely a great objective. For example, an older steel car isn't necessarily better than a newer one made of fiberglass, as the safety features have improved over time to allow for higher survivability - though some people will use that argument as well.

But specifically, when your car gets hit on a highway hard enough to land on top of a sound barrier wall, it doesn't matter how safe it was. You're still likely dead. All cars are moving coffins, make no mistake. Technology has made it so that certain crashes for certain vehicles are better sustained - take for example the differences between side, front, and corner impacts - between newer and older model cars and even between different models and types of cars. But the use of the words safe and safety are too often used interchangeably and incorrectly.

You are correct, but only to extent. It's rare to be involved in an accident of that magnitude. If you're hit hard enough or hit something with enough force, every vehicle has a breaking point. That said cars today, for example Audi's space frame technology, prevents the cars from losing their form, which greatly improves the likelihood of surviving a collision.

The ultra-compact car market, Yaris and the Nissan equivalent recieve high ratings in their class and low ratings compared to cars of a larger size which was my point. Larger cars, average sedans or hatchbacks, have better technology in the frame of the cars. These compact cars are built with cheaper materials to save money and are really impractical on top of that. In any kind of bad weather they really struggle to maintain usable power.

As mentioned several times by myself and other posters, use Edmunds.com and use all of its features. Browse both new and used cars by price range and check out what offers, if any, are available in your area. It's hard to find used cars that aren't abused in this kind of economy because people aren't selling their old cars to buy new ones at much. It is a buyers market if you are patient and wait for the right opportunity.

Have you driven the Yaris? I don't think I've driven a Toyota in the past 10 years that didn't feel extremely disconnected from the road.. I test drove a Corolla back in December and it was sooo boring. So disconnected from the road, anemic in power and not comfortable above 70mph on the freeway. I can't imagine a cheaper Toyota being any better.

How soon are you buying? The Ford Fiesta is coming out later this year.. atleast test drive it if you haven't picked up a car by then. I'd take a new Ford over a new Toyota any day. Fiesta > Yaris, Focus > Corolla, Fusion > Camry. I've even thought about picking up a new Mustang GT to replace my G35.

And Nissans are generally more expensive to fix than other brands.

I was going to say anything further, but are you retarded? The higher your ranking is, the better, its a top 10 list. Ford, lincoln, mercury, jaguar are all in it, its a good thing, you can't make fun of them for it...yeah I think you're retarded

here's the full list http://www.cars.com/go/advice/Story....ct=most_depend ...see how many brands trail them?

That's another thing I couldn't articulate about referring to safety. Cars that have less feedback for the driver are less safe because the driver has to assume more. With a car that has better steering feel, the driver has more control over the car and what it's doing.
