Won't this actually help sellers? A lot of the newer games have you tie it to an account on their server which removes the ability to resell the game at a later date.

Granted, they're money grubbers but its a good and sound business model and like it or not, if its successful, it will stay.

Wanting to get paid when people play your games = 'money grubbing'?

The used game market is a pretty huge pest to most devs. Not a cent goes to them, it's all to the reseller. A system like this would be fine, since it would force used game sellers to lower their price. People that want to play online wouldn't buy a used copy unless it's priced $10 lower or better.

This is exactly what's going to happen, except not just when the games first come out.

Used games will continue to be a couple bucks less than new, gamestop won't say shit or lower prices at all, people will just get ripped off harder.

I'm still pissed about not being able to swap certain saves between PS3s due to fears of people abusing trophies and shit. I guess forcing codes on games is a bit of an extension of that hassle, as it doesn't sound like you could just take the disc to a friend's place and play online there because they wouldn't be registered.

Still, things like that are better than an entire industry dying (see: pc gaming) because they can't deal with cheats and piracy effectively in an open environment.

But yeah, not being able to play online without your own psn account is lame as hell.

I hope you're trolling, because the PC industry is not dying.

Yeah yeah, pc gaming's not dead, that's why I had to give up and buy a ps3 to be able to play 90% of the games I want within a year of release, let alone without spending 2k a year on new systems.

The fact of the matter is people are literally just plain giving up on the market. (see: madden & co, guitar hero/rock band, etc. etc.) It's too much of a pain in the ass.

Don't worry broski, I'm not attacking PC gaming. I'm just pointing out that the open nature of it is making developers just plain say fuck it quite often now.

As if PC developers were ambitious enough to make games which REQUIRED you to pay 2k a year! (Wait, what? 2k a year?) No, no, developers are too busy making console games on the PC which for obvious reasons can run on under "1k systems" using prices from three+ years ago. It must be rather unfortunate for those who could afford those fantastic yearly 2k upgrades.

    LOL

Piracy killing videogame industries is a myth... an exaggeration which is perpetuated by both developers and their fanboys all over the internet and the press. The main reason(and the reason tied directly to this thread's topic) developers rant about piracy or used-games is because they believe that had those options not exist almost every single pirate(yes, even the the fucking Russians or "demo" players) or gamestop customer would be in their pocket, meaning a drastically better bottom-line. Many use these boogiemen to justify outrageous DRM or something like this. It is not life or death.

It is not by chance that the with very few exceptions the most successful games are also the most pirated(PC and beyond). It is not by chance the most successful games are also the most successful resold games. (Anyone else get kick when people talk about Modern Warfare 2 pirates?)

(I mean just look at the Dreamcast. The easiest console to pirate on. People think this is why it died, not the fact Sega had painted themselves in a corner with dozens of retarded decisions before and after its release or the absurd negative spin it had from every magazine/website.)

As for why PCs are behind consoles(as if the PC market could die... lol, by the time they stop making PC games "consoles" won't exist anymore), there are plenty of reasons, but they come down to the fact that all the hype and effort goes into consoles. Consoles are more accessible(or at least are portrayed that way - since it certainly isn't very true with stuff like Steam around) and they are cheaper. But most important than both of those they are more mainstream and that is where the money is. The commercials, the casuals, and the crap. (Mainstream gamers that is. For the non-gamers surprisingly enough PC rules: Farmville LOL.)

There are other things too like entire genres like adventure games(and in some ways RTS) falling out of favor, Japan(best action game creators) ignoring PC(up until very recently, but...), PC games being gutted so they can multiplatform with consoles, people comparing 3-5 platforms against one, etc etc. But really it all comes down to the fact the developers and the PR guys want xbox360 to succeed more than PC. They crunched the numbers and they make more money that way - with or without piracy.

EDIT: Also I am not going to reply to you Plow, if you feel like trying to make this a back and forth. Your presence in this thread is not unlike a clown. Comic relief. So I will just let this be the punchline.

I'll reply to anyone else, at least one time. (But if you are more or less the same as Plow, then it will probably be only one time. This thread wouldn't need anymore.)

Yeah man, my system that was brand new 3 years ago and has had numerous upgrades since runs Crysis, which came out that year, perfectly.

    Oh wait.

Piracy is a part of it.

    Cheating is another part.

Steam helps with the interfacing, but for the most part it requires a lot more effort to create your own store, your own online system, etc.

It's simply not worth the trouble when you can build for a system that takes care of all that on its own...

And, oh yeah, you don't have to try to help millions of clueless dipshits that fuck everything up on their own and then bitch at you when you can't remove the 82 viruses they picked up in the last 4 hours. They just mindlessly ship the system off to sony with a wad of cash and wait for it to fix itself.

PS4 will replace PC's for 90% of the people that buy them, which will be a good 20% of the U.S., at least.

And then Sony will 'update' the PC part out when someone finds a way to pirate on the system.

    Won't need a "PC part."

PSOS will have full suites of home software, it just won't be flexible at all.

So the PS4 will basically be an iPad with flash support then.

Flash won't matter 10-15 years from now.

It'll cover your basic computing home needs:

Word processing/spreadsheets/etc., some Photoshop type stuff, who knows if it will actually get into design stuff, movies and games, web browsing, yada yada.

It will just be in a completely closed environment. Exactly like it is now (hell, probably more so), just with more tools. You're not going to install msn and yahoo and firefox and blah blah blah. You use their browser, their productivity suites, their friends/im/chat systems, their shopping/downloading systems, etc.

It's the same shit microsoft would have done (and gotten away with, or mac would have pulled it off if not for... yeah not gonna go there) if they'd built their own systems as proprietary units that were the only legit way to run their software.

So yeah, I suppose it is a lot like an iPhone, really lol.

But, yeah, those are terribly overpriced and replaceable by equal or better quality for less money.

PS can compete with PC pricing because they're willing and able to sell at a loss, and right now without replacing anything nearly as important as a phone, PS3 has sold 4x as much as iphone in a market (consoles) half the size (cell phones).

Epic Games cut its teeth in the PC market with games like Jazz Jackrabbit and Unreal, but it's hard not to notice what appears to be more of a focus on console games. Aside from its Unreal engine, which the company licenses out to other developers, Epic's biggest push comes from its Gears of War franchise. Gears does appear on PC, but the series' console roots are tough to ignore. What's behind the apparent shift in focus from PC to console? According to Epic, the answer is relatively simple.

In an interview with Edge magazine, Epic president Mike Capps cites piracy as the primary motivation behind the move. The Sixth Axis has posted excerpts of the interview, in which Capps says "the money's on console."

“If you walked into [Epic's Offices] six years ago, Epic was a PC company," says Capps. "We did one PS2 launch title, and everything else was PC. And now, people are saying ‘Why do you hate the PC? You’re a console-only company.’

“We still do PC, we still love the PC, but we already saw the impact of piracy: it killed a lot of great independent developers and completely changed our business model.”
