I just dont get the mentality of people who dont play the game in tounrys yet complain about tiers when they are as decent as BBs. litchis a bitch but shes hardly played and bangs pretty easy once you get used to 5as range. Just play the game and enjoy it instead of complaining about how things youll never see are broken.

I'm gonna assume you're talking about people in general and not assume that i've never played a tourney in my life, trust me i've been in plenty, won and placed in GG, just never BB because BB is almost non-existent here.

Guilty Gear was and is infinitely better balanced then BB is, but you can follow Arcsys history of balancing fighting games to see how fucking ridiculous it is. What went on with Bang and Rachel between the 2 titles is about on par with how they balanced out Johnny, Ky, May, etc., with characters jumping almost randomly around the tiers in each iteration.

At least Chipp and Potemkin stayed relatively stable in the tier lists since those were the two I played.

Will be nice when developers can code an AI for fighting engines that's capable of attempting every possible combo in the game and spreadsheet the info out for the devs to use to finetune.

Would be a huge fucking chore to write up though. ;/

This isn't even hard to do, I've seen some of the doujin fighting game devs do this long ago.

It's not hard, they just don't care.

The amount of play-testing that goes into fighting games is shockingly minimal even at the giants.

Er, what? CS alone was doing location test tours for months. How much play testing are you expecting?

Yeah but how much of that time is actually spent with people testing the AI? Tekken and the Virtua Fighter series in recent years have done an absolutely amazing job of putting good AI into their games, via the ghost system (in Tekken) and whatever they call the same system in VF, having the AIs modeled after actual players in some cases and not just easily decipherable pattern based AI most fighting games use.

If you play those games offline a fair bit you can actually notice the differences between the different AIs used even between the same character.

Loke tests are as much about "testing" as most MMO betas are, they're promotional events primarily.

Even then, they're looking for glitches and stability issues, not game engine balance issues, games 99% done by time it gets to a loke.

Course this all masks the real reasoning behind why simply script-testing for all possible combos/spacing isn't done.

People don't buy balanced fighting games.

The Guilty Gear precedent shows AkSys is much more at home simply printing a new disc with the balance changes over time. People certainly bought Λ Core Plus at the end of that particular cycle. All this time spent on 'adaptive AI' certainly hasn't made Tekken, VF or any doujin animu fighter top-of-the heap fighting games, let alone balanced ones. Guess right, juggle, win. Business decisions steer where development time is spent, amazing discovery.

At last check Tekken 6 has sold over 3 million copies in the US (SFIV sold 3.1 million with an 8 month head start on T6), how is that not top of the heap?

And I'd argue Tekken 6 is the closest thing we have to a balanced fighting game available right now, almost every character in that game is viable.

BB's AI is terrible, I actually won Arcade mode on hell by standing at the opposite end of the screen as Jin and just spamming the ice sword projectile move. After a couple hits, and the opponent at the other end of the screen, they just bug the fuck out and stand there punching at the air half the time.

Clearly you don't know tekken very well to make that claim.

Also it's not top of the heap because despite selling more, the tekken community is shit, people just don't play the game competitively on anywhere near the scale of other games.

Western/Central NY and Toronto area was considered a Tekken Mecca for a long time, with one of the most active communities, and at it's height it didn't even approach 1/10th of the SF scene.

Now-a-days our Melty Blood scene is more active than Tekken...lol.

Eh, T6BR is pretty balanced. You've only got Zafina and Yoshi as totally unplayable. The top tier is pretty solidly Lars, Steve, Bruce, Bryan, Bob and Lili, but they aren't really that far ahead of the mid tiers. American players are fucking retarded, so the only non-top tier guys you'll see are a couple Laws (Rip) and Aris' Dragunov. In Korea and Japan you'll see virtually the entire roster represented all the way to the end. Even this season of Tekken Crash has several capos, bears, Ravens, Asuka, etc. represented. T6 was shit, but BR is the most balanced game I've played since GG:AC

I remember at last years Evo, the community pretty much shit on Tekken 5 because 6 was coming out. Money is money is money... but if a new version is coming out there isn't a point in training/competing?

In BB news, having trouble deciding on a main.. played Taokaka, Rachel, and Hakumen in the original, not sure what to do here.

Tao is pretty good if you can get her taunt loops right, otherwise she has a tendency to get smacked around pretty bad by some of the characters with huge hitboxes (i.e. Hakumen).
