    Debit Card halp

So.. I've had my debit card now for a while, and its coming up on expiration, and this is my first card, got about four months left on it, and haven't received a notice or anything in the mail about signing up a new card, do banks generally just let the cards expire and expect you to call up and ask for a new card?

You wouldn't know that though because you've demonstrably never picked up a book nor educated yourself on the matter. Let me guess, overweight housewife?

usually they send it about 4-6 months in advance. You can always call to have them send one even if it isn't time yet. They won't charge you for it either.

could differ by banks, but chase was always automatic the several years i worked there.

as long as the account its linked to is active, you should receive a new card in the mail 1 or 2 months before it expires.

Awesome, yeah I run with Chase, and I was starting to worry in the back of my mind, I'll keep this in mind and if I don't receive anything in the up coming months I'll give them a ring, would suck to be late on mortgage and get slapped with an even bigger bill to pay.

If you use a calendaring app put the expiration dates of all your plastic (driver's license, insurance, debit, credit, etc) in it and have it bug you about it 2 months prior. My bank sends me new cards in envelopes indistinguishable from the monthly statements I 'file' in a big pile on my desk and I've called them a few times to replace cards I buried without noticing.

The card producer we work with sends new cards out the month before they expire. So for card expiring in June, new ones would go out this month.

Chase should send you a new one without a call or anything as most banks have some sought of auto reissue system.

you pay your mortgage using a debit card? switch it to a CC with rewards and get free stuffz! then simply xfer money from your checking card to your CC account and you'll never pay a dime in interest (think you get 25 days, iirc). i pay for EVERYTHING with my CC, then just xfer the balance from my checking, all online (chase acc + chase freedom CC). points start adding up fast.

wth? i'm still a retail banker at heart, why am i posting this?

I never understood the whole points thing, and the use of credit cards always drives me to believe it would fuck me over rather help me which is why I stayed away from them, but that does sound like a reasonable idea, I may have to do that.. free stuff is always nice :D

if you REALLY want to avoid CC altogether, you can pay $25(iirc) a year and turn your debit card into a chase leisure reward debit card. same principle, you use the card and gain points which you can trade in for free stuff.

a chase freedom CC has no annual fee. to give a quick run down: i get 1 point per dollar i spend. on top of that, certain types of purchases yield more points. such as gas, restaurants, home depot, to list a few. so when i get gas and spend 50 bux, i get 200points. then you go to a website and you can exchange your points for stuffz!

just go into your bank and sit down with a banker and they'll go over everything and give you pamphlets and shit to read over.

If you use your Chase Debit card to pay for everything, definitely get enrolled in a rewards program with them. As long as you spend around $250 a month on that debit card you will come out on top at the end of the year.

I believe their new rewards program for the debit card is 4 points for every $5 spent. $50 cash back is 5k points.

You should call just to make sure that your card is being issued. I use to work for a bank and although cards are supposed to be automatically re-issued, mistakes do happen. Hell they forgot to give me a new one due to a system error once.

As said above my Failpy generally I get my new one sent to me about a month before it expires. Could always call your bank if you are worried about it.

unless canadian banking regs are completely different, i think you're thinking of an ATM card, which will not expire as long as the account is active.

a debit card with a visa/mastercard logo all have expiration dates.

i could be wrong, i don't know shit about canada, but just clarifying the difference between an atm card (no logos, just used to access account @ an atm) and a debit card.

oh, i know something about canada: they drink milk out of bags. wtf?

    edit: also the habs suck!!!

Oh, we call those credit cards, I don't believe we have any sort of debit card like you're speaking of... is it meant to access both bank account and credit card account?

    the difference is:

ATM card: can only go and get cash out of an ATM

Debit card: can use it anywhere (stores) and it'll debit the money right out of your account.

When they first came out you could charge your debit card as credit and there would be a few days before it kicked into your account (in case you didn't have money), but now it's all stream lined and doesn't make a difference.

Ah, that's where the confusion is then, we probably have them but I never see them, we always call the ATM cards debit cards and credit cards credit cards, everyone I know just has two cards *shrug*
