So what you're saying is, over half of American English is unmasculine.

edit: and slang is an attempt to gain back that masculinity lost to the french so long ago

    Exactly.

Even worse is that we had options and we CHOSE it, because British English doesn't have the same level, because French vocabulary wasn't entrenched in the common language, but in the colonies it was "Fashionable" to use the King/Queen's English as opposed to common varieties.

What I'm really saying is that America was founded by unmanly men, who celebrated their femininity by modern standards.

The Gang says power bottoms and bears aren't unmanly.

Frank Reynolds: You don't look like a gay guy.
    Dennis Reynolds: That's because he's a bear.
    Mac: What?
Dennis Reynolds: He's a bear, you see some gay guys are twinks and other are bears, this gay guy is a bear. By the way, we are totally cool with that, to each his own
Frank Reynolds: Wait I'm a little confused here, what's a twink?
Dennis Reynolds: Twink is small and slender, like mac.
Mac: Whoa, no, I'm too muscular, I would be a bear.
Dennis Reynolds: Uh, don't think so bro, not hairy enough.
Frank Reynolds: Smooth. Now, I would be a bear.
Dennis Reynolds: No, no, I see, I don't think you'd be a bear either, as a matter of fact I don't know what you'd be, you're definitely not a twink.
Frank Reynolds: I'd be a top, that's for sure.
Mac: Can a twink be a top, or is that reserved for bears?
Dennis Reynolds: I'm sure there's a great deal of switching back and forth but I think more often then not bears are tops, unless they happen to be power bottoms.
Frank Reynolds: What's a power bottom?
Mac: A power bottom is a bottom that is capable of receiving an enormous amount of power.
Frank Reynolds: Actually Mac, you've got it backwards, you see, the power bottom is actually generating the power by doing most of the work.
Frank Reynolds: Does power have to do with size or strength of the bottom?
Mac: Now Dennis, I heard speed has something to do with it.
Frank Reynolds: Speed has everything to do with it, you see the speed of the bottom informs the top how much pressure he's supposed to apply, speeds the name of the game.

    lol?

Unfortunately, I have the sad task of informing you that masculinity is not tied to or defined by sexuality. (Neither is femininity, but that is another thread.)

A man without masculinity having sex with a woman. Manly?

To be manly is to be masculine. They are adjectives to describe a person. A sex act doesn't make someone more or less masculine or feminine, because the people engaging in sexual behavior already possess masculinity or not before they engage in sexual acts, and the sex act does not alter it.

Sure, some people have a fetish of being made to "feel" more or less masculine. However, this is largely heterosexual men wanting to be emasculated by a female, and this is usually done through power exchanges where the male is removed of all his power and the female bosses him around, ect., for sexual pleasure. And, importantly, these behaviors do not change the persons masculinity once the sexual act is completed. The sex act was only to make the person "feel" one or the other temporarily. Regardless of how emasculated a man feels during his sexual fetish, he regains his previous level of masculinity once its all done and cleaned up.

and by society you mean heterosexual white middle class males? probably christian too (or at least, religious).

no, unfortunately, my previous post had nothing to do with morals and only with the correct application of concepts (sexuality and gender adjectives stand alone).

the thing with society is that the majority tends to be wrong. most of them are uneducated and/or biased due to their being uneducated, regional influence (midwest, south, ect), or biased due to religious fervor, or just bad upbringing for any of the previous reasons and also bad parents.

you can say that is society's view, but i'll still say you're wrong. because, who's society? i am fairly confident the society i exist in shares my views. of course, i don't live anywhere backwater.

I knew a gay guy who specifically pursued straight dudes, he was attracted to "macho guys, not poofs", he said you can find macho gay guys, but it's easier to find a straight one.

    Your results may vary.

Also: Sleeping with another man isn't masculine, but on meth it is.

Ah yes, the gay men who only like "straight acting dudes and/or straight doods". These gay men tend to be fresh out of the closet and are still dealing with insecurities relating to their sexuality and their perceived masculinity. The problem seems to originate from the fact that the typical gay stereotype is not masculine, as can be seen in most tv shows that have the token fag.

These guys who are still dealing with their insecurities believe in that stereotype that most gay men are not masculine, and that they some how are irregular because they're masculine, and so they must pursue other "straight acting" men to validate their masculinity.

They tend to get over this once they realize that gay men are as varied in their masculinity as straight men. Their masculinity identity crisis comes to an end and they continue on with their lives.

    ymmv

Yeah uh... I think that while that may hold in some cases, it isn't an absolute rule.

Only Siths deal in absolutes, I know what I must do.

I think the big, hefty, hairy bear stereotype is about as big as the limp-wristed flaming queer, and you'd be hard pressed to call a leather-clad bearded man on a motorcycle "unmasculine," unless masculine/feminine isn't a binary pair. At that point the question becomes about what constitutes "unmasculine" without being "feminine." Homosexual activity seems to qualify, but what else lies between "unmasculine" and "feminine"?

Also, Cair's question of whether a woman fucking a woman is "unfeminine" really should be answered. Would it count as masculine, or would it occupy that nether region on the spectrum that people describe as, "I can't define it, but I know it when I see it"?
