    Seborrhoeic dermatitis

I've gone to my family doctor and a skin doctor now but the shampoos and creams they've given me have pretty much done nothing. I've had this for a long time now but it just doesn't want to go away.

Products/Prescriptions I use(d): Head and shoulders(my normal shampoo), Sal Shampoo, Zinc Shampoo, Promiseb Topical Cream, Locoid Cream, moisturizer, over the counter medicated soap, other creams/shampoos I don't recall the name of.

    Problem Areas-

Flaky/Crusty Skin: Nose/Cheek, Chin, Behind Ears, Eyebrows, and in my hair on the back of my head.

Redness: Pretty much my entire face.

Before I go to the doctor again are there any over the counter products or home remedies I can try to get rid of it or at least make it less irritated/noticeable?

You know, I've thought about making a topic on this here reecntly to see if anyone else was affected by it. I've been suffering from SD for many years now, about 7-8 since it really started developing. A couple of people in my early 20's pointed it out, and it used to be really really bad. I had a lot of scabs and flaky skin all over my scalp. I was very self conscious about it, and still am, but not so much since I don't have it bad at all anymore.

It blocked a lot of the pores, and for some reason I couldn't help but pick at them. Because of those two things and probably genes, I am suffering from Male Pattern Baldness. It's not too bad at the moment, but if I grow my hair long, you can tell how thin it's gotten. I just shave my head now and it looks alright.

Unfortunately for those of us with SD, it will never go away. It is pretty much a condition that you can't cure. You can lessen how bad a break out is, or stop it with steroid use, but I don't have it so bad that I need it. My mom actually found a really good cream for the scalp that helps me a lot. It is the stuff in the following link. http://www.amazon.com/dp/B001RUVVWS

You can usally find a deal somewhere online where you get a bunch of them for a less amount of money, My mom has a website where she gets 5 or 6 for 35ish dollars + shipping. I'll ask her where she gets it if you want. You can apply it 2-3 times daily (I only use it once) and you should see improvement. As far as shampoo goes, I use a couple of different types that help. The first is Neutrogena T-Gel shampoo, which has 2%Tar Coal. It doesn't smell too horrid either. The second is a fairly new one that works even better from what I've seen. Been using it about 3 weeks and had minimal to no outbreaks. That one is called MG217. Do a google search, you'll find plenty of info. It has been getting many positive reviews, so it's worth checking out.

I really feel your pain on this, but I've been very lucky with it and don't suffer from it nearly as bad as you or many other people. I've seen images that are just horrifying. I only get it on my scalp. I wish you luck, and if I can be of any further assistance, let me know. Feel free to PM me.

I had problems with this on my face. I use a hydrocotisone cream daily on the problem areas. If yours if really bad I would apply several times a day. The symptoms went away in a couple weeks; if I do stop putting the cream on they start to come back. For scalp, I have never found any shampoo that works incredibly well.

How old are you? I'm 18 now but I think I have had this for a year or maybe longer now. Only recently have I actually started to try and take action since I assumed it was nothing to be concerned about. I pick at mine too, really need to cut it out but my fingers keep finding their way to the irritated areas.

Been dealing with similar for a few years now, complete with hair issues as it's either stopped growing in as thick or just plain stops after a certain length on the upper part of my head. The worst of the flaking is actually on the back/sides, though, and it usually flares up every 3 weeks or so when my hair starts getting thick there. Sometimes if I get a sweat going and wipe my head, I'll get a sort of grimy sandy feeling from all the dead skin trying to mix with the sweat, too. Not yummy, and it's annoying if it gets under my nails.

Sadly, with no medical, I haven't been able to get an official diagnosis, though personal researching has had me find there are no cures for what I've found of these various forms of dermatitis or psoriasis, and outside of the steroid stuff, all I've really been able to do is try some shampoos or creams and hope for the best when I've got the money to spare. As is, best treatment I have is just keeping myself buzzed, but sometimes that'll agitate it for a couple days and I'm really too lazy to do it more than every few weeks (aka when it starts making me look like I'm 30 years older than I really am).

This is exactly what my dermatologist prescribed to me, it worked wonders sadly I ran out and it came back slowly, it seems to flare up in colder conditions and it burns like hell.

I just wash my face twice daily, use moisturizing lotion that has no oils in it that would block pours and cause build ups, and it isn't that bad, I mainly cover some of the blemishes with a skin tone powder make up, but I don't see many guys doing that, so may want to stick with that cream

    As for scalp, I've never had a problem with it, I knew a few friends that had bad dandruff and they said head and shoulders did nothing for them, I think my cousin had dandruff but not that badly, Neutrogena T/Gel is what he used, had to ask on MSN ._.;

My dad suffers from this quite severely, and he has to do all that stuff you mentioned to keep it under control. I have it also but not very badly/noticeably and only get flare ups in the winter (I think it's the combination of being out in the cold and coming back into heated buildings that starts it off for me). Never had anything on prescription, coal-tar shampoo (neutrogena t-gel i think? my dad gets it on prescription) for the scalp and facial scrubs (the kind with little grainy bits to exfoliate) + moisturisers tend to work for me. The worst thing is having flaky, dry skin around my temples as nothing, bloody nothing, gets rid of it until the flare up is gone.

I'm in the same boat although it is most heavily concentrated in my scalp. One thing I have found for me is that the flare ups occur much more frequently when my hair is longer. So I usually get my hair cut every three weeks to keep things down. What I was doing that had been working was using the T-Sal once every other day (once everyday when I would go to the gym and shower twice in the same day). I believe one of the biggest problems is picking at it. For some reason, when I don't pick at it everything is fine. But when I absently pick at it, the condition becomes way worse.

I get it off the shelf at walmart. Probably not as strong as a prescribed variety, but it still does the job.

Brother used to use T-Gel for his eczema and it worked well on that. Just if you've got highlights or dye in your hair - be aware it does tend to strip it pretty well (I've used it in the past to tone down teenage-year hairdye disasters).

Hydrocortisone cream applied up to 3 times a day depending on how severe it is.

    For scalp:

Got rid of the itching enough so that I don't pick at it, and the flaking goes a way after a couple weeks of usage. The key here is consistency, you have to keep up with both every day otherwise it'll just get back to the way it was.

It's a hassle, but it's better than walking around leaving flakes of yourself everywhere

Hrm, the dermatologist told me to use the Locoid(hydrocortisone) cream just for a week. There's no harm in using it daily?

I've been using it daily for over a year and have had no negative side effects that I can see.

the problem with hydrocortisone over a long period is the same as something like wearing a knee or ankle brace for longer than you need-- problems that should "get better" never will, as your body will become dependent on it and not perform what it needs to

in other words, go for it... if you don't mind having to use it permanently

otherwise, keep going to doctors until you figure somethign out
