Am I the only one curious as to how she made it into the K-12 public educational system in the first place? Do they not check for citizenship? Or is there some law that says no child can be turned away or something?

Everything I read about this ITIN refers to "being used for federal tax returns only".
Are they also used, or is there an equivalent for state tax returns? What is an ITIN used for?
ITINs are for federal tax reporting only, and are not intended to serve any other purpose.
Prolly get flamed to hell and back for this but ill say it anyways...
Why do people who come to the USA not apply for citizenship if they plan on doing more then just working the fields? Is our system so complex and half-ass backwards people are either denied citizenship or its just difficult in general to become one that people don't do it?
Honest question.
I am all for people coming here to better their lives but when my tax dollars has to pay for little miss Mexican who is mooching off the system, that is where I draw the line.
That was what I was guessing. Thanks for affirming it. Seems kinda backwards to me. I know it is the "public" school system and that they are just kids and all (not exactly their idea to cross the boarder), but everyone likes to bitch about how strapped the education system is for funding. Maybe, we should spend United States budget on educating legal US citizens.
The type of people who hop the border usually won't pass the system in any decent amount of time if at all.
There is a prioritization for people from other countries and prioritization based on occupation. I have a British uncle Doctor that wants to retire here and he got his green card so fast. Comparatively lots of family still in Asia are still stuck over there.
Well what is the requirements to pass the system to become a citizen?
We all know that people coming up from Mexico has been a problem for decades yet we do nothing to stop it, I mean REALLY stop it.
Unless we build a 30 foot wall along the border and stop them from coming over we should just review our system and maybe make some major changes.
Also
I agree with this. If Mexico wasn't such a shit hole because everyone with a decent mind kept leaving then maybe their country might improve. How about kick her back to Mexico, so she can make her own country better, then maybe more Mexicans will stay in Mexico.
This^
Seriously what the fucking hell. Did she get an A++ on a paper in English? You can't really compare her gpa to other people who got a 4.0 and say "Oh well she's smarter", due to the fact that her highschool/teachers just let her do some bullshit extra credit work even though she had 100% already. Tough shit if she's illegal, the law is the law. She can apply for citizenship and show them what she's done, but then again she and her family have been breaking the law since they came in.
My GPA when I gratudated high school was a 4.42. The Valedictorian's was a 4.64.
The additional weights are to recognize achievements in honors level or Dual Enrollment (we didn't have shitty AP) level classes.
It's extra incentive for students who A) qualify to take, and B) pass, higher-than-average classwork. You couldn't just sign up for these classes at my school. You either had to have a GPA threshhold, or teacher/counselor recommendation.
I can't speak for the system in any state other than Florida, but if they're system worked like ours, then she was a decent student who took a few classes above the norm.
As to the issue at hand, rules is rules. Are we going to play the Elian Gonzales shit again with her? You know, if she's not 18, she's about to be, and I'm sure some bleeding heart attorney will pro bono her ass to help fight this, expedite some paperwork, and get her a student Visa.
Big freaking whoop.
She doesnt want to consider getting a green card? or her parents? just so she can legally get help to go to school? Is not paying taxes such a big deal for these people?
few things.
1. you're retarded.
2. She can't 'just get a green card'. If all it took to get a green card is showing up somewhere we wouldn't have any 'illegals'
3. They do pay taxes. In fact I'd venture as far as to say they pay more taxes then your average poor American since they don't qualify for Tax credits or Tax refunds less they risk getting deported.
that whole OP was written in a way to make me feel sorry for her, didnt work though, and if they are paying taxes couldnt that make it easier to deport them? how can someone with no SSN get taxed.
yeah even I felt bad for rhinox reading that one
Why is this even a thread? The UC system sucks balls right now anyway.
Also, what makes this story so fucking special?
I wonder just how many kids out there would love to go to a $30K a year college, but can't find the funding.
And she wants to major in Political Science. She might as well burn the loan money.
I did read it, if you dont know the answer, say that.
You cant get a tax refund if you never paid taxes, you havent shown me 1 example of how an illegal alien can legally be paying taxes.
I have no sympathy here for her, or any system that wants to usher in people through something like a Dream Act, it's gonna make the illegal immigration issue worse.
