last fortress i had, the mayor harmed the fortress
make adamantine items he says after 3 years, lol
we have never seen adamantine
so then he says, blacksmith/metalcrafter/weaponsmith goes to jail
so blacksmith goes to jail and no one brings him water from the well even though everyone is set to bring water
so no more blacksmith and tons of bullshit iron stuff made training the next smith
the fucking mayor froze production of a ton of shit

Do you have to micromanage everything

Dwarf therapist makes micromanaging each dwarf's labour easier. But yeah, basically everything requires micromanaging. And depending how anal you are, you can micromanage more or less. You don't need to do things like tell dwarves when to eat and drink or tell specific dwarves to haul things after you set them to be moved or dumped or whatever as long as they have hauling labours enabled, but virtually everything requires some sort of intervention on the part of the player. If you have a manager, you can issue production orders in volume so that you don't need to individually go to each workshop and set up orders so that's another way to simplify things. When you set something to be made, any dwarf with the labour required to make it will attempt to build it if he is allowed to use it in the workshop's profile so this is also semi-automated after the initial configurations.

Some stuff can actually be automated in very complex ways (i.e. there's some computing you can do using complex constructions so you can build logic gates and stuff) or simpler ways like pressure plates.

there is no water in my newest fortress because it is in the desert
if someone gets injured, they are only given water to drink so we just gotta hope no one gets injured
if someone gets put in jail, they are only given water to drink so we have no justice system
i dug down to the first underground cavern to find no water
the dwarves are subsisting entirely on outdoor farming because we cannot generate mud anywhere but the caverns and those are a bit dangerous for the farmers at the moment considering that we have not had the second migration wave yet
