I do love the way my "residential area" sort of evolved though. I always planned ahead of time so it was like I built for 10 when I had 7, then more came and I built roughly for 25, then 10 more came and I built for 50 or so. It sort of looked like a spiral but not really, it was just sort of cool how that turned out.
The only thing in my dorf fortress that's even remotely designed well is the bedrooms are all kind of together and waste as little space as possible, the dining room is right next to the food storage, and the food storage is right next to the kitchen/still/fishery. Other than that I have one huge room that I put all my workshops in side by side and then I made another huge room across the hall for them to put all their finished goods in and that was that. Otherwise it's just like wtfever do whatever you want. I dont have to worry about any efficiency because it's just like whatever.
If I keep playing this save state I dont think I'll have any problems with any hostile threats. I made a wall around my entire thing. Then after that I figured out how to make a bridge, then I figured out how to make a moat, then I figured out how to make a lever make the bridge into a drawbridge. And before I even learned how to make a moat I already learned how to make and use siege weapons so I'm really not concerned about hostiles.
It just seems like my biggest difficulty is keeping my idlers below 10 to which I summarily just set them all to smooth something.
