    Question about routers DMZ

Recently i bought a Linksys router(WRT160N) and i'm having a few probs with the DMZ.First of i want to only set up my PS3 to DMZ, so i have the following questions:

1)Should i set my PS3 to DMZ or just do Port fowarding?(I know DMZ opens all but just to get the question out of the way)

2)If yes to DMZ, I have the following window that i dont understand

DMZ enable or disable(this one a no brainer)

    Source Ip

    Any IP
    or
    Set IP

    Destination IP
    IP address 192.168.1.___
    or
    MAC address

In my old Linksys router(WRT54G) used to be 1 option

    DMZ Enable or Disable

    Host IP 192.168.1.___

    and that was all.
The problem is i don't understand where do i put the PS3 in Source IP or Destination. My apologies is this a dumb question but i'm not tech savvy enough for this.

That looks like destination ip=host ip from your old router. The difference looks like your new one allows you to specify which outside ip's can come across your dmz to your destination machines. I don't really know, but the 192.168 part that appears set for the destination would be your systems, and therefore source section would be outside.

The destination IP is your PS3. The source IP option is there in case you want to provide DMZ access ONLY to/from a specific source to prevent attacks from any random location around the net. For your PS3 you would just set it to Any IP.

But really, just forward the ports. It's safer.

    PSN uses 5223 and UDP 3478, 3479, 3658.

Since the PS3 isn't running Windows, I see no reason not to just put it in the DMZ. There's not really any attacks someone can really aim at that system that would do much to you. That also saves you from having to open more and more ports for new games. Data will go to the PS3 unless it is directed to a specific PC with port forwarding, so it will keep your Windows computers out of trouble.

Thank you very much for all the answer, i guess i will put it in DMZ unless anyone can give me a good reason not to.

Any modern router should support upnp and not require you to DMZ anything that was made in the last 5+ years. NAT w/upnp is widely accepted these days and shouldn't be a problem for PS3, xbox, etc...

I have Universal Plug and Play enabled on my DIR-615 and FFXI still disconnects me after a minute of being logged in, no matter if it's on my PC or PS2, unless the machine I'm playing on is in the DMZ. It worked fine on my old Linksys WRT54G, but I ditched that brand because the router itself was unstable, the last three models of it I had, and it would overheat, lock up, and drop our connection several times a day.
