    Bem me up xiao scotty!

    http://arstechnica.com/science/news/...free-space.ars

Scientists in China have broken the record for quantum teleportation, achieving a distance of about 10 miles, according to a new study in Nature Photonics. That's a giant leap from previous achievements.
    from popsci.com

what i didnt get was.. they were sending ion particles? or "items" wrapped in photon particles?

Quantum teleportation is more along the lines of altering one thing and "seeing" that alteration in another place because they can be in two places at once. I think this is right in the simplest terms

Also, This is right on the money. Basically its called teleportation in name only, because matter isnt being moved at all in any form or fashion, so the teleportation as we understand it is false. I hadn't read the posted article yet, but im sure that is goes into some detail about how it works at the quantum level.

Mizango, correct term would be quantum entanglement?

Entanglement is different from 'teleportation' in the fact that when it comes to teleportation (I hate that word) you're basically taking 2 already entangled particles, separating them by some predetermined distance and changing the state of one particle which would cause its entangled, joined at the proverbial hipped counterpart to change its state also.

Not sure how adept you are in QM but that is about as simple as it can be put really lol. Einstein dubbed it "spooky action at a distance" as far as the teleportation aspect of it goes. I'll be back when I get home if you have more questions, I'm heading home from work finally!

This is cool and all...but we all know scientists are just liars.

You wouldn't know that though because you've demonstrably never picked up a book nor educated yourself on the matter. Let me guess, overweight housewife?

I for one, do not look forward to this.

You know some drunk ass new scientist is gonna fuck it up once and the whole earth is going to:

    Fucking computer...

    Ok, trying that again.

Picture taking two quarters and sticking them together with bubblegum so you've got heads showing on one side, tails on the other. You can imagine flipping it and getting heads or tails as normal, just with two quarters, right?

Now picture stretching them apart so the gum stays stuck between them, still easy to see.

Unfortunately the metaphor kinda breaks down at this point, but bear with me.

You've got your quarter stuck by a thread of gum to my quarter 10 miles away, when you see what side shows on your end, it determines what side I see on my end immediately.

You can go into all sorts of shit about eigenvalues and hilberts spaces, but you, like most people, would be like "what the fuck was that guy smoking, and where can I get some" probably.

See this is why I titled the original thread "Teleporting Information"

You are not moving matter just information about that matter. I think that this has more implications in communications than actual teleportation.

How long does it take B to change it's state after you changed A's?
I always thought it should be instant and it wouldn't overcome a "real" distance, but maybe the information actualy travels at light speed? Idk, but with a distance of 10miles i'd be interested to hear of an experiment to test this (if we actualy have the equipment to measure such incredible tiny time difference).

Reminds me of that binary method of communications in ME2 involving that one piece of matter that changes color with the other one it is in sync to.

This is why Einstein didn't like the idea, it doesn't travel at light speed, it doesn't actually transmit the information, both of the particles are in a state where they act like one object even after being separated.

The issue being that if it is superluminal/instantaneous transfer, it defines an absolute plane of simultaneous events that all observers would agree on, which kinda kersplodes special relativity.
