Steam/Digital Download Games You Should Own

So there are tons and tons of games on steam, and tons of games available digitally that are really hard to weed through. For people that like the convenience of Steam and maybe... dare I say, EA Downloader, and other such software; why not know what is good, bad, worth buying and whatnot. This is a Semi-"PC games you must have" thread, but that one is old and never updated. Plus, this thread is for games available digitally only.

Note: Obviously many games listed will be available through stores or other means, hard copys, etc, but if it is available for download then it should be here.

I need some recommendations as well, but to be fair I'll start with what I think people should check out.

    Battlefield Bad Company 2
    CS:S
Day of Defeat:Source (set up a small LAN with 5-6 friends and play this, amazing)
HL2: DM - same as above
Hidden: Source beta <- awesome, especially at 4am with a few friends - Can be scary as shit over a friends house. Google it.
    L4D2
Mass Effect 2 - no brainer, you have to have this
Portal - think it's still free?
Torchlight - Diablo spinoff, ok to kill time when board
    Fallout 3

Right Now I'm looking at Metro2033, Just Cause 2.. demo for Just cause is ok, not sure if I want to spend the 50 on it though.

    Team Fortress 2, obviously.

Also, if you haven't gotten portal yet; shame on you. It's free, brah.

Metro is nice and atmospheric but the replayability isn't exactly fantastic.

Beat Hazard is addictive as fuck.

Wee indie game in the Asteroids style shootems except your weapon power is tied to the tempo of the music track. Very simple game and very easy to burn an afternoon on without noticing and you'll get as much play out of it as you have MP3s multiplied by about a billion.

Stay the fuck away if you suffer from epilepsy though.

I hear The Path is also quite...something. It's a very surreal take on the Red Riding Hood story where you're encouraged to go off into the forest.

    Natural Selection.

If you don't know it think of Starcraft but first person shooter with Terran (Marines) and Zerg (various life forms). Classic Mode is similar to Starcraft style where a player acts as Commander for the Marines who can see the overlay of the map and his team on it (aliens as well if the team is nearby or scanned). Commander can drop things to be built for upgrades, resources, weapons, jetpacks, etc while the rest of the Marines go find the alien hives to take down (3 max).
Aliens don't have a commander but instead have a lifeform that can build to allow upgrades (speed, defense etc) and drop hives for further upgrades and boost higher life forms.

It has a Combat mode (more popular and casual friendly) which is essentially a deathmatch style game where you start as level 1 and level up from fighting and upgrading on your own with points you get from levels. Most servers have mods to allow past level 10 limit and additional upgrades.

Would be good to play Natural Selection prior to Natural Selection 2 which Alpha should be out in the very near future.

I'd add Freespace 2 for those who like their space flight sims.

It's open source and there are a ton of user made mod's and campagains.

    I belive it's $5 from GoodOldGamesdotcom.

Be sure to check out BSG: Beyond the Red Line and Wing Commander total conversions.

If you're into music games and have a guitar controller that works on PC (any wired 360 one will work), Frets on Fire is pretty awesome.

The engine isn't as perfect as GH or RB, but it's damn good, and it has every GH/RB song ever pretty much converted and available for it, as well as just pages and pages and pages full of just every kind of song you can imagine.

The only flaw is that for the most part the people making charts aren't bothering with anything below expert, and tons of them are crazily intense and hard as fuck even for great players.

The dev behind the game is considering adding additional formats as a DLC purchase.
(to help cover the licensing costs associated with such formats)

I bought it anyway it's a bitch sorting through iTunes folders as well on the game, wish I could just add the entire song library I have all at once or something instead of clicking through 12 folders just to find I can't play that song lol.

Still fun. Master of Puppets was a good time on hard.

If your getting HL2/portal(and did not get it free/dont read till after its not free and are the only person living under a rock with a PC that was and or still is broke)

Got a lot of fun games.

    Civ3/4
    Psychonauts:Nuff said lol
    Defense Grid: The awakening
Indigo Prophecy: you will be let down the second half of the game ; ; Still fun
    Overlord1/2: I liked em
Painkiller: if you like that sorta think(I do)
crysis: if you have a pimp PC and I mean pimp.. you have to try this out, they are making crysis2 graphics less I think then the 1st because of how far the core took it LOL if you got a gaming PC its worth it just to see how far you can push your PC.
link to show it off a tad lol http://91.198.165.69/showthread.php?t=130825

Most of the games I got on sale from steam sales >.< dont know if you would want to pay full price for them. I have a lot more like L4D2, ME2, CS:S, Braid, Borderlands and such but they where named and I dont want to just list off all my games lol

S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Shadow of Chernobyl - Absolutely fantastic game, albeit it heavily glitched with some glitches being particularly more shitty than others. At one point saving caused me to crash. When I moved to another area however, the problem resolved itself.
S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Call of Pripyat - Also fantastic, is practically glitch free.
    L4D/L4D2 - Amazing
Tropico 3: Very worth it, also since now its on sale. There is a save glitch where some people's games crash when trying to overwrite a save file. It does happen to me but others report they play the game fine. The way around this glitch is simply to make a new save everytime. The music is fantatic and the feeling is awesome.

I dunno why anyone would recommend Beat Hazard, its Can't See Shit: The Movie: The Game

The Longest Journey, and Dreamfall: The Longest Journey are good games if you're a fan of adventure games.

On the same note there's the Sam and Max games from Telltale, Lucas Arts Adventure Set, and Monkey Island.

My computer's not all that nice and GTA4 always ran fine on it. I generally turned settings down just to keep temps low, but I had no problem with it even set very high.
