Putting 7+ GB .iso onto a DVD

So I dl'ed this .iso of the first disc of Slayers Revolution here
    http://www.demonoid.com/files/details/2159152/1550444/

The file is just above 7 GB, which doesn't fit on a 4.7 GB DVD disc. I tried to research and found out ripping from the DVD gives you a file larger than the actual DVD disc itself (this isn't dual-layered either).

I dunno the mechanics of how that is possible but are there any suggestions for making this fit onto a DVD? I've heard of different things like compressing it (but would lose quality) and even something that it would still burn it for you and make it fit automatically...

Using IMGBurn usually for .iso files if it means anything

When I tried to initially burn it before noticing the size it said to use the .mds file and clicked it automatically. I stopped there after I noticed the size. If I remember right, .mds acts like a feeder for burning .iso but I wasn't sure if it would help make the file fit too.

I might be wrong but I'm guessing it had to be a dual layer to get 7 GB off one disc. The fact that he lists the bitrate in the torrent too makes me think it's not quite untouched video to start with. I'm fairly sure the only way you're going to be able to burn it to disc is to either have a dual layer burner and dual layer discs or do some sort of encoding to it to reduce the file size down to one DVD.

His profile mentions this in regards to the iso

All of my uploaded ISO's are direct rips from R1 DVD's using a combo of AnyDVD and ImgBurn
They contain EVERYTHING on the DVD with no re-encoding or compression
They may be either DVD5 or DVD9 in size depending on the original source material
If you would prefer a re-encode, please ask in the comments or the forums.
That was what I went with... I mentioned that most rips I saw in my research was that they would end up this large to begin with. I couldn't find information that the actual discs themselves were dual-layered, just dvd.

You quoted it yourself, DVD9 is a dual-layer DVD so you're gonna have to burn it on a DVD DL for it to work.

Most commercial DVD nowadays are dual layer.

Or you can mount the .iso using Daemon tools, and rip it/reencode it using a different codec that your DVD platine will support (since I suppose, it's to watch on that)

7 episodes, of 25 minutes, you can probably get it sized down to 1-2 GB depending on the resolution without losing much quality.

If it ends up being over 4.7 GB, it came off a dual layer (DVD9). The only way you'll get a DVD9 down to that size is tossing out extras and or reencoding the remaining content.

How strange then that most things I've read said they're bigger when ripped than the dvd shows (when they were making backups) and I couldn't find info on this boxset having dual-layer discs...

Oof I see then... I really have no knowledge of making it smaller through that method but I read somewhere about using a program called DVDShrink. Would that work as well? Yea, I want to be able to play it on a DVD player is my goal

dvdshrink will allow you to remove all extra content, features, languages etc.. It will also compress it without much quality loss. Whether this will shrink it enough to fit on a single layer disc, idk.

Tried DVDShrink, not much to remove besides English voice since just about all of the size is from the video and voices.

Compression was at 60.8% after removing the english voices (just 558 megs...), left me a bit worried on quality but decided to test it out. In the end, I kept getting messages like "Out of Memory -- The Parameter is incorrect" from compressing or just even analyzing. Yes, I have plenty of HD space before anyone thinks that is the reason.

    /sigh

try dvd fab, it has an option as to what size to make the iso.

DVD Decryptor and HandBrake are all I usually need for something like that.

I've got a DVD player that understands DiVX AVI files off of disc or USB data storage though, so I rip to those formats for smaller file sizes.

Why aren't you just burning to a DVD-/+ R DL though? They're pretty inexpensive if you buy them in bulk. I've gotten them for 50 cents a disc for a stack of 30 at Office Depot on a sale. All the burners I see on the market are capable of DL burning.

Looking at my father's somewhat recent dvd burner, it apprently had DL capability. Used DVD Fab to decrypt it, IMGBurn to put it back into ISO format, then burned it on DL with IMGBurn which seemed successful when I tested it on the pc. Can't test it on the dvd player yet but assuming it'll work.
