A STUDENT has been saved from a vicious assault - not by the boys in blue but the men in black.

Ninjas scared off three thugs who had the misfortune to attack the 27-year-old medical student outside their warrior school.

The German exchange student had been targeted by the men while he was riding the late-night train home, The Sydney Morning Herald reported.

They demanded he give them his wallet but when he refused and got off the train, they followed.

They pounced as he made his way through a dark alley in Sydney's west.

They grabbed his phone and iPod and kicked him while he lay on the ground.

However, the men were spotted by a member of a nearby dojo.

Nathan Smith told his sensei and the rest of the students at Ninja Senshi Ryu and they rushed out to confront the thugs - all dressed in traditional black ninja garb.

On seeing the ninjas, the men fled, only to be later arrested by police.

"You should have seen their faces when they saw us in ninja gear coming towards them," the school's sensei, Kaylan Soto, told the Herald.

They also failed to notice a ninja, Nathan Smith, standing in the shadows outside the dojo. Mr Smith immediately alerted his sensei, or teacher.

Another ninja, Steve Ashley, said: "It was probably the worst place in Sydney where they could have taken him."

Ninjas in training, indeed. Story would have been much better if the ninja student had seen the other guys, alerted his sensei, and then 20 ninjas appeared out of nowhere completely surrounding them before they had a chance to escape, let alone notice they had been discovered. Followed by some martial arts moves to disarm and incapacitate them.

If I had to fight any martial arts student it would probably be someone in a ninja school. I'm betting that it attracts the least athletic and nerdiest people around.

Since they were all at the dojo, I'm guessing class/practice was in session, and so they likely were already dressed for it.

I was thinking about that, but I don't think they'd be practicing in the full black outfits. I could also be wrong though.

2 major flaws with that:

1. Ninjutsu is fucking dangerous shit. It's not your basic self-defense martial art. It's about war, and the attacking technique is quite literally designed primarily around killing your target. Hence its favor as a popular culture icon-- "the art of assassination" sounds pretty damn cool.


2. Further, it is, more than almost any other martial art, centered around being able to severely injure and disable people with minimal contact or expenditure. I.E. scrawny nerdy ninjas that are "good" are not just likely to win, but to seriously injure someone they're fighting that's just "average," be it within the discipline or into others.


There's also the whole issue of "you can't have the kind of balance it requires without at least *becoming* athletic in the process," but meh.

Depends on the school, not the discipline.

Some schools you'll have black belts that couldn't fight their way out of a paper bag. Others you'll have mid-range belts that kick ass because the instructor is actually worth a damn.

And yes, 'Ninjutsu' schools will attract quite a few geeks that don't know any better and still won't after training. Then they'll go and brag to people "Dude, I know ninjutsu!" right before getting thrown to the ground and choked out.
