Looking to buy a new desk~

(Move me if I'm in the wrong forum!)

I've been dreaming of having an awesome computer/computer area for a really long time. With good, steady money on the horizon, I'm planning on investing some money in a new PC/desk/CHAIR (if you saw my other thread, I finally decided on a chair and it's in the mail :D) to improve an area where I spend a lot of my time. The chair is taken care of, and I have friends to help me figure out a PC, but I need help with a desk.

I've put in some time looking for a new desk (staples, office depot, omgonline) and I haven't found anything that really clicked. I searched this forum and already went through the entire desktop thread for ideas, which pretty much reinforced what I already had in mind. I want a nice desk, something I could keep for a while (I'd rather buy something to keep than to use for a short time and get rid of, too wasteful), meaning it should be pretty :D I like those L desks, those corner desks, and desks with glass, or otherwise covered with something that can be cleaned easily. Something darker would be nice, either black or a dark wood that I would feel super awesome about as I sat there for hours and hours :DDD I just want something nice that would add to the whole setup. I dont necessarily want a hutch.

I currently have one of those composite wood look-alike desks and I hate it. I can't put my legs underneath because there's a lame separator for the PC that hits me right where my knee is, and on the other side is a shelf that runs right into my shins So leg room is necessary! This desk has a pull-out drawer for the keyboard and mouse, which is nice, but I dont think it is necessary given that I'll (finally) have a big-ass flat screen, leaving room for keyboard/mouse on the desktop.

Anyone have any ideas on where to go or what to get, or have a desk that they just think is so awesome that Nirokun should have it too? :D I'm willing to spend money on a nice desk, but probably no more than $500. Pretty with leg room please!

It's hard to give a definite model when Ikea themselves have 500000000 of them.

I'm gonna buy a L-shaped desk soonish so let me know if you find something :<

Odd since I was doing some web dev related to this, give: http://hecklerdesign.com/onelessdesk/ a try, but they were a bit expensive ;x

If you plan on being there for 'hours and hours', I would highly recommend a setup more akin to mine. Which conveniently lacks a desk except for the foldup one I use for holding things I'm not using.

Its also better for your neck when you eventually pass out.

For just a basic L shaped desk, Staples makes a pretty decent one for 99 bucks that I've had for a while. Granted it's not the sturdiest thing in the world and I haven't been good about taking care of it, so now it's starting fall apart a little so I'm going to have to replace it soon:

Pretty basic, but you can't beat the price, and I like having that little stand on the right side to put my tv up higher so my ps1 and gamecube fit below it.

    http://www.staples.com/Z-Line-Gemini...P4543:CL164556

I will probably replace it soon with either the same thing, or a Glass L-Desk. The only problem with glass desks is that if you have a mess of cables underneath, they show EVERY wire every time you look at it.

Here's the glass one I was looking at, it's frosted glass and only 99 bucks at office depot:

The only downside to that is when office depot doesn't have something, it's like pulling teeth to get it lol

Got this corner desk at Staples many many years ago and still in great shape. Highly recommend it.

I think I might get this desk: http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/70103033 and sit it on a pair of these http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/00146762

I'd want to paint/customize the shit out of it. Or leave it as is, because http://farm1.static.flickr.com/235/4...621a3b0640.jpg looks nice.

My beef with the L desks Atre is that they legs would just make me angry, because I'd constantly bump into the as I turned from side to side, or if I wanted to work in the corner.

The other corner desk just looks so confining, and I'd want room for my monitor to grow :D

I cross my legs a lot

    edit:

    Now I want this: http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2529/...71c3474257.jpg

Will go with my monitor, is cheaper, don't have to worry about breaking any glass.

Cons: black is inflexible decorating-wise (oh well)

    It's gonna be awesomeeeee

This is what i'm using as a computer desk, it's quite an effective table being from wal-mart and the perfect height. Another option is a kitchen table which also works beautifully.

most of the glass desks are tempered, which are arguably sturdier than the flimsy wood ones you can get for the same price or cheaper lol

Anyway I can't imagine life without an L-desk now... having 2 computers (or even 1) on a regular desk means you have literally 0 space to write. With an L-desk I have 2 computers, a TV, 2 gaming systems, various peripherals/lamps/stationary, and still have room to spread out all my bills/papers.

Saw that table in person and the thing that bothers me is taking stuff out of the shelf under the glass. If you're not planning on using the bottom part, why not try http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/28057600. That's not the only design it comes with. My girl bought one recently and it's fucking huge.

wow, that actually looks nice maybe it's the lightning >_> Maybe you might want something a bit bigger for future expansion? It all depends on how much desk space you'll be needing to determine a size. Don't get something too small or too big for the room/office.

You could possibly L shape that Ikea setup if need be?

This is the desk I use
    http://www.officedepot.com/a/product...lass-Computer/
    http://static.www.odcdn.com/pictures...0475_sk_lg.jpg

Bought it almost 5 years ago, and it's still like brand new. The only thing I wish is that there was a nonglass version, but it works fine.

This design fits me perfectly. Tons of leg room, you can even rest you leg on those support bars you see in the center, I have two monitors in the middle, with two PCs on the floor next to the legs, and there is still a ton of room. i center myself in the middle, and swivel side to side (plent of room for a chair as there is no cross braces in the way) if need be.

It comes with a pull out keyboard/etc tray, but I didnt find it necessary to use so I didnt attach it. There is also a seperate and optional roller cart thing for files, PCs, etc.

I love it, aside from the glass being wierd at first, it's been great, and can surprisingly hold a lot of weight.

Where did you find that desk...

I've been looking for a longer desk for a while. I use 2x 26inch monitors and I've been using them sidebyside, but they have to be angled inwards on my current desk. I've been thinking about having the main one straight in front of me, and the other to the right somewhat, but still, at 26inches a piece, it's a shitton of room needed.

If you want something like that, why not consider making a door desk?

IE, go buy a flat solid-core door (~$50-60 example) + some L-brackets and 2x4s/4x4s/etc? Or just rest it on a couple filing cabinets.

Was made (somewhat) famous by Amazon as they chose to save money on things like office furniture when they started. Google door desk and you'll get results.

Personally, that's what I plan to do...one of these days, when I can mooch a truck... (or feel like paying $20 to rent one at Home Depot).
