Like Zealot said, turning a thread into one-on-one cock fights can render cheerleaders impotent. Minimalism and brevity is key if you want to avoid an unresolveable discussion, tiresome quote wars, and/or being mobbed by plebs.

As an aside, that's most of the reason people say they prefer spam. If post lengths are a tenth of what they are in general, nobody has a chance to say anything especially retarded or questionable.

If someone's gonna psychoanalyze you and question the motivation behind your posts with safe face or umad etc., denying their assessment is the most impotent and ineffectual thing you can do and it's pretty much instant loss. Thankfully, most people are pettily projecting when they do this, and if you can read that sort of weakness in your opponent, it's often a simple matter to turn the accusation around. The truer your counter criticisms are, the more effective this can be. Conversely if you're projecting just as hard as your opponent is then it'll only end in a draw at best.

Rage only works in wars of personality. If you're in such a pissing contest, getting mad basically means you've lost any moral battle that's going on. That's why the umad maneuver is so popular. If you're not mad and someone pulls that card, see above.

So this thread is about strategy, or "How to convince stupid people that they're stupid", a daunting if not impossible task.

This isn't the goal of argument though.

In fact once you have concluded the opponent is hopelessly stupid(or just stubborn, in some cases) then the argument(discussion, w/e) should shift focus to taking questions from others. You should be teaching someone who wants to learn, basically.

If you are the defender though it is hard to time correctly, and the attacker can call it at any moment, leading to a dangerous game of Russian roulette with every post you don't call it on them first.
