If you're the primary line you qualify for an early upgrade once a year.

I'd still go ask the store though if you can use it. Call them up and see.

yeah online if I go to upgrade the line and browse the phones it shows full retail, I'll be near a store tomorrow and will go see

edit: derp, google reveals that if your contract expires this year then you're eligible for the subsidized price, can't find anything outside of that but I'll ask a verizon employee anyways :z

Well other that pulling some .apk's the early response from the dev/hacker community is that the Droid X will not be getting root. Motorola has signed the bootloader. No custom ROMs no nothing. So unless Moto screws up or something leaks what you see is what you get on the Droid X. With that said, if true and no root happens on the Droid X, Droid 2 and possibly even the Droid Pro then Motorola will be losing a customer as I will be going to HTC and whatever carrier has the device I want. Truly is a shame.
Not from moto; just a forum post. Going to keep me watching to see if its worth upgrading or not. this is one of the reasons the droid sold so well. hoping it is false.

the only promo you may be able to take advantage of is if your contract ends in 2010, then you can upgrade to any smartphone. Personally, I don't understand why people are in such a rush to upgrade their phone on the eve of LTE and 4g. LTE is coming to verizon this year, I would wait and get a phone that can use it

Eh... signed bootloader doesn't make root impossible. Probably someone who likes(or rather, didn't understand totally what he was talking about) to spread unbased rumors.

    Spoiler: show
Thinking twice about it, he's probably talking about the read/write access to /system which isn't possible with a signed BL indeed buttttt many phones are working with a semi root and that doesn't even remotely affects 99% of the users. You can still do about everything, except Metamorphs and shits

As tethering becomes a bigger deal I think carriers are gonna start finding ways to block rooting so they can charge for it (hai Sprint Hotspot). Of course this will probably never work given the the open source nature of Android, but hey.

So this may be the start of seeing that but, a signed bootloader is just going to make things a little harder, it's not even remotely going to stop rooting.

wonder what the droid 2 is going to retail for, looks EXACTLY like the original, minus the dpad on the slideout keyboard; camera is still 5 MP and stuff, too. choice is clear for me on 2 vs X, I almost never use my slideout keyboard on my regular droid anyways.

I hope so, rooting is one of the main draws that I love. Once they get it rooted I will most likely upgrade a few months later(if not that week)

All things considered, how is the Droid 1 overall? I decided to stay with Dinc, but they're now pushing delivery dates back one week so the X is looking good again. The only thing keeping me wanting to wait for Dinc though are the X being Motorola(had a Q9... worst phone ever) and initial reviews saying it gets slugging at times.

The Droid X has a 1GHz TI OMAP processor, and the phone has been quite responsive. It's not quite as lightning-fast as the Droid Incredible, but we were able to open multiple apps with little delay. There were a couple of instances, however, when we returned to the home screen and the background went completely black before returning to normal, so we'll keep an eye out for that as we continue testing.

The Droid X will have better gaming performance obviously, but I'm pretty sure under day to day operation the snapdragon is gonna beat out the omap.

Ability to game is cool and all but idk... does anyone really do so much of it on their phone to need dedicated GPU?

Only games I play on my phone are emulators/Bust-A-Move/Pocket Empires, and none of those care about the GPU.

Edit, that guy needs to kill background apps on his evo before benchmarking, because mine does 7+, and was doing 6.8 or more on stock. Wow, 418 Quadrant, mine is at the 560 range. I think he's trying to make the snapdragon processor (and by extension the Dinc, to make people buy the newer phone) look bad because I've never seen an Evo suck so bad in benchmarks.

I just want to be able to look at the Random Image Thread without any lag from my phone. Sounds like Snapdragon might be better for that.

the droid original is what I have and it's served me very well and still does, I just want to upgrade and the idea of a decent HDV pocket cam interests me, I was going to get a flip HD but if I can consolidate down to one gadget (just the phone) instead of the flip + my phone, then I'm in. but the droid 2 looks identical to the droid 1, I just don't get it, X should shit all over the droid 2 unless there's some bombshell they're going to announce at the last minute that it supports LTE/4g
