Nope, Yu Gi Oh wasn't around when I was in school. I did play Magic for a bit with some metal heads one year. Never did the eyeliner thing, hell I don't even have pierced ears or jewelery or anything like that. I also hung out with different groups of people at lunch every year of highschool to be honest. I never really 'conformed' to any one group, but I was able to get along with just about everyone.

In middle school, it was pogs.

Pretty much this. It's funny that people exclaim "beat em up!" when it's probably a combination of bullies, bad parenting and just that natural need to rebel causing this new fad. I mean, if you beat up a goth...they just turn more goth, so picking on these brats would just make them further descend into their current fad.

Not only do they look the same but they act the same. I feel bad for all the kids who dress and act like this really. I mean how much must you hate yourself to want to be a fucking werewolf. They're just scene/goth kids with tails tacked on. The extra part seems to give them a sense of separation from others and unity unto their own group (the guys with tails vs the guys with just makeup/other emo shit). It's not original but the likening to a pack can give them a family mentality so I guess that's... pretty much just like any other gang of people? Werewolf thing is lame, but I'm not gonna attack someone's beliefs as long as he's not hurting anyone. After all, nearly everyone is really fucking weird in some way, some just have fewer inhibitions about being weird openly in front of others. That takes a certain amount of courage and the resolve to take what you have coming to you if you get beaten/ridiculed by your peers. I honestly don't think furry has much to do with it at all, though I'm sure some of them are probably furries trying to fit in with the only people who will let them openly be themselves. The wolf packs remind me more of Otherkin, which are far scarier than furries.


Incidentally, those tails are sold en masse at anime conventions and renfaires, I actually have a black fox tail I got from a renfaire. They cost like 20 bucks and fucking break first chance they get. Hot Topic is way late on the uptake there, as tails you can chain to your beltloops have been around for years and years and are very popular in geek-laden venues.

Perhaps what we really should be blaming is media. Aren't all these vampire, emo, werewolf subcultures merely the modern don quijote? No one ever took seriously the idea that books, tv, movies make people insane, but without these media, would all these freaky ass subcultures exist?

Subcultures don't really happen without some kind of community and social interaction, don't they? It's not enough that MTV existed (passive) for there to be a punk scene (active). Or are you just making fun of a cliche opinion that people typically have on topics like this one? Well, at any rate, I'm going to keep talking.

I mean, the internet is a great example for offering a spawning ground for any number of distressingly particular subcultures and fetishes for users who would otherwise never find like minded individuals to pursue their weird interests and fantasies with. You could argue that modern communications also enables anti-social behaviour that way, by shielding children from normative social pressures. If you make that argument, the line about bullies not doing their jobs even makes a bit of sense.

If you take outliers from a sample of one hundred, do that a hundred times, and then put those people in their own social group, you'll get social norms in that group which are entirely abnormal and unacceptable in the others. Maybe one person in ten thousand has a diaper fetish (or the potential to develop one), for example. Put that person on the internet, and he'll find enough like minded perverts that it will seem to be acceptable, and he'll cease to feel guilty about it.
