    Modem Advice

In lieu of my previous networking problems, I have decided to buy a new modem. Now when it comes to what I'm looking at, I have no clue about the specifics.

I'm looking for something that can handle a good bit of strain on it, and I'm only looking to spend about 50-60 bucks, if that's possible. My wired router and wireless router that I will be using with it are both linksys, if compatibility is a problem (Cable internet).

Any input about what I need to look for as far as specifics or actual modems would be much appreciated.

You didn't give much specifics (ISP, speed of your cable line? idk never used cable)

So I looked on newegg and found Motorola and Linksys, now my instincts tells me to avoid Linksys like plague (you should change your routers while you're at it really.) so here's the Motorola

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16825122011 looks like it caps at 30mb/s, if you have more might be a problem idk.

Maybe your ISP can provide you with a modem that doesn't suck?

That's perfect actually. Charter Communications is my ISP, and really, the junk they give out is just terrible. And I agree about linksys. I would really like to replace all of it with something else, but that's not in my budget at the moment.

Also if I was to get a different brand modem now than my routers, could that cause compatibility issues, or do they all basically work together?

They should all work together, ethernet is ethernet, no problems.

I'm sorry i would bitch so hard at my ISP. You are not only paying for the service but the hardware when it comes to internet service. If they are not keeping up with the hardware you should bitch till they do. I have heard nothing but bad things about their service, but if you're paying for it i would at least expect the basics.

You would be correct. They are terrible in my experience. When I first started the service about 5 years ago, I had all their equipment, and it was nothing but trouble...not to mention the customer service was useless.

So I decided to cut my ties with them as much as possible with getting my own equipment. If I had a better choice, I would take it, for sure. Our local phone/DSL provider is Embarq (Which bought out our local Sprint contract years ago) is really just as bad....but I might try to switch back to it regardless...

Another question, how much of an effect does the length of coaxial cable between the main service box to the modem effect quality? I do have the wiring ran through a couple of splitters and a bit of cable. Would shortening up that distance solve anything?

Edit: meaning would it solve my modem seemingly dropping signal. It hasn't been moved or anything recently, and this problem just started.
