Yeah, mnk AF and relic are some of the rare sets where "enhances" pieces can be equipped upon activation, taken off, and still get the bonus.

It's a shame that dark rings are basically useless unless you can get both mdt/pdt @ 5% on them .-.

That doesn't make any sense. Dark Rings (-5% PDT anyways) are better than jelly/patronus, and for -MDT, you can sell merman's if you get them with -4% or more.
Besides, there's the 33k factor.

PDT with 3 or more is better than Patronus Ring, but as said earlier, it's hard to try and use one for PDT and one for MDT due to the identical names.
