Movie Ticket Prices Hit $20 Mark

Movie Ticket Prices Hit $20 Mark

    http://www.slashfilm.com/wp/wp-conte...re-550x366.jpg

Only a couple months have passed since theater exhibitors decided to jack up the price on movie tickets in response to the popularity of 3D films. Today, with Shrek Forever After about to hit screens in IMAX 3D, prices are rising again, some as high as $20.

According to The Wall Street Journal, several theaters in New York City will charge $20 for an adult ticket to IMAX 3D showings of the fourth Shrek film, including the AMC Kips Bay, the AMC Loews Lincoln Square, and the AMC Empire on 42nd Street (pictured above).

In a survey of 10 nationwide theaters (via LATimes), BTIG analyst Richard Greenfield figures that while March’s price hikes were roughly 10% for IMAX 3D screenings and 8% for regular viewings, today’s hikes will bring up IMAX 3D prices 2.3% for adults and 2.8% for children. It’s clear that with the summer movie season underway and with a glut of 3D films at the box office, exhibitors are willing to test how much consumers are willing to pay for a couple of hours of entertainment.

It remains to be seen whether such price hikes will become truly widespread, and whether or not they will have any impact on a film’s attendance. With tickets now at $20 a pop, taking your wife/husband and kids to a family film (plus buying them popcorn and candy) can easily run you upwards of $100. That’s a helluva a lot for movie outings, which have traditionally been a relatively cheap form of entertainment. Shrek is probably a good, popular choice to test the price elasticity of movie tickets but for $100, you could easily buy enough Shrek DVDs to last your kids for a week.

Not that you’d want to. I’m just sayin’.

So we might not be breaching the $20 wall just yet, but note that tickets for Shrek at theaters like the AMC Lincoln Center will still run you $19 a pop.

More reason not to see films at the theater.

Ah, one good reason to live in a relatively small city: cheaper movie tickets. On Tuesday's the theatre near the universities has $5.99 movie ticket prices. The medium popcorn actually costs more than the ticket.

Big cities tend to have a larger total amount of people who have disposable income and are willing to dump it on stupid shit.

I've been to those theatres, the service is not worth 20$. You could get 5 bootleg movies for that and enjoy them at home.

Wow so glad I live in a small town. The normal price for non 3d is $7.25 and I think they charge maybe 1-2$ extra if it's 3-d. Although they still charge out the ass for any food you get there... like the $4 nachos I get everytime lol

One thing I loved about Rochester was the dollar theaters they had while I went to school there. Pretty much right after the movie left theaters but before they went to DVD they'd end up there, and christ was this such a money saver. Stuff like Anchorman me and my buddies saw right away but other movies we'd just wait for them to appear here if there wasn't a good rip available to download. They even let us bring in our own food, I try that here in NYC they try to confiscate it in most theaters. I miss that place sometimes...

But yea, this is why I rarely go to movies in NYC, fucking prices are ridiculous. Maybe if I didn't have to hide my food in baggy jeans or a snickers bar up my ass I'd be ok with paying these prices, but if I want a snack it costs an arm and a leg -_-

Actually on food, even other states nearby are better. I went to the theater a few times in Allentown, PA and if you pay like $5 for the biggest bag of popcorn, you get infinite refills. Infinite. They change the bag design so you can't save it and use it another day without fail, but just split the $5 with your buddies, each of you bring your own bag, get separate refills = 4-5 people with a humongous bag of popcorn for $5.

Especially if they have jalapeno peppers with them <3

Edit: We also have a $1 movie theater about 20ish minutes away. Pretty much did the same deal as Cleverness stated, right after movie left theaters it went there

$20 is about 1/3 of the price I paid for a year of unlimited access to Megavideo. Love life

The cheap movie theatre is an amazing thing.... You have to wait a few weeks longer to see a flick, but $3 per ticket? Hell yes.

Cineplex has also brought back Cheap Tuesday ($6.50) which is pretty great.

I thought this hysteria died down already.

    http://mediadecoder.blogs.nytimes.co...ch-not-really/

But AMC now says the prices were wrong. Tickets to see the film in Imax 3-D actually cost $17 to $19 at AMC Kips Bay, AMC Loews 34, AMC Loews Lincoln Square and AMC Empire 42 Street.

“Unfortunately, a limited number of theaters posted incorrect pricing for ‘Shrek Forever After,’ which we immediately corrected,” the theater chain said in a statement. “Any guest who purchased a ticket at the incorrect price can visit guest services for a refund.”
If it was a typo, oops. If it was an extremely rapid backpedal, oh well.

There are no $20 movie tickets, folks.

The AMC near my place has an A.M. cinema deal @ $6 person +1/2 for 3D/IMAX $10 Matinee $12 Adult. There's also a theater in Simi Valley that show films (once they get old) for $3. Not too bad but better than $20 dolla. F00k that.
