I think everyone in this thread is missing the point. If you live in New York City, and have nothing to do but shell out 20 bucks to see Shrek fucking 4 in IMAX 3D, then the way I see it you deserve to be anally raped. By the theaters or otherwise.
I've learned a long time ago to change my habit of going to the theater for new movies, now I just wait till a DVD Rip is up on the internet to watch.

Also, I never understood the need to gorge yourself on expensive junk food while you stare at the screen.

They jack prices up, and then complain when people decide to download the movie instead of watching it at the cinema.

    Big surprise, wonder why.

I also liked Empire Theatres Daily Deals of Summer promotion. It was always good to save a few bucks on a movie night. Personally, my wife and I haven't paid for a movie in a while. We save up our President's Choice Points and use them to buy Empire Cards from the Superstore when we want to go.

I stopped going to the movies regularly when the ticket price was >50% of the DVD cost. There are very few movies that are worth the experience of seeing them on the big screen.

Not really surprising how box office earning records keep falling...$20 can still buy 2.5 tickets around here.

Ever since I got an nice widescreen TV and good sound, I haven't bothered with going to movie theaters. I don't feel compelled to see movies during the first day or week anymore and am content on waiting for a BD rip or just renting for $3-5.

Fuck all of those assholes that need to piss three times in two hours, or the ones that jibber-jabber throughout the movie, or the douchebags that leave their mobile phone ringer on.

Or that 6'6" bastard that always chooses the seat in front of me.

I see about 3 movies a year in the theatre, the rest can wait till Blu-ray. I'm really wishing someone would release a service that would let you download 1080p blu-ray rips with scene settings (7-11 Mbit video) making each file somewhere between 8-12 GB. I'm sure even if they did that they'd want to charge $20 a movie but I'd be all over it at $10.

4-6$ for 1st morning am weekend showings @ my local movie theaters. 10am-11am early.

    7$-10$ for normal time.

    13$-15$ for lol3D

on navy base they show movies that have been out for a few weeks. 3$ adult. 1.5$ for kids. senior citizen pay 2$.

best over all is local mom & pop drive-in opens during late spring to early fall season. they have 3 lots/screens show 2 movies per lot. 8$. very popular during summer where I live. dont even need to turn on radio, can roll down windows and hear people's 5k$ stereos nice and clear. people bring sleeping bags, blankets, pillows, lawn chairs and just chill. they have typical concessions along with pizza/hot
    dogs/burgers/lattes. 2$ for hotdogs , 3-5$ for burgers 10$+ for pizzas.

I've thought about something like that for a while, like you pay 15-20 bucks, and you can just download it right when the movie releases. Boom, you get to watch it as often as you want, and they get their money.

Like iTunes does with tv shows.

I don't remember when was the last time I went to a movie theater. I used to go pretty often with my dad when I was younger, but that was mostly because I felt bad cause I hardly spent any time with him, so it was something we could do together. >_>

Yet to see any 3d movie, don't think I really care either. OMGNEWMOVIEMUSTWATCH was somewhat applicable when I was younger, but now, I have no problem waiting a few months before watching whatever movie, if I even get around to watching it. Kind of funny how most stuff goes from "omg super hype omg omg watch" to "meh it wasn't that good" or even "it fucking sucked" in those few months.

And big studios wonder why people continue to d/l movies and watch them at home. I love going out to watch movies, but $20 for a movie is way too high.

Are you serious, just cause you live in a big city you have to pay higher prices for movies. Thats unfair, when you already pay higher taxes, rent and other things.

I think this is pretty much how I feel, I was all excited about Iron Man 2 coming out and I have yet to go see it, probably won't till it's out on BR

Your incomplete quote of my original post aside, yes, the cost of living is higher in places like New York City as opposed to West Bumfuck, Iowa. That means your rent will be higher, you will pay more in taxes, and movie tickets are going to cost more. Why? Because who wants to live in West Bumfuck?

What insults me about this is not the price of the ticket, it's the quality of the product being delivered. There's obviously no way most of us would pay 20 bucks to see Shrek, but I can promise you if you stand outside that theater tonight, there will be a line for it. Now, if the same theater was charging 20 bucks for a 3D IMAX showing of Eraserhead, even with the extra ten bucks I'd have to drop on a hit of acid I'd probably go.

Around the Kansas City area the prices are:

    5 bucks in the morning

    8 bucks for afternoon/evening shows

Not sure about 3D because I am unable to watch them so I dont bother.

The funny thing is, they'd probably make way more profit by slashing ticket prices. Look at Steam's business model. Massive 50%+ sales = massive legit purchases. I know I've bought a ton of steam games on sale that I would've pirated or ignored at full price.

When's the last time you've ever seen a full theater outside of premiers? Cut prices in half, advertise said price cut, and I guarantee they'd more than double ticket sales.

It explains why all those disaster movies are always destroying New York.
