I'm convinced the writer was not familiar with TMNT, decided to learn about the franchise starting from the old cartoon, watched the intro of the old cartoon, and then stopped there. The turtles are caricatures which are best described by the single phrase from the old opening: Leonardo leads; Donatello does machines; Raphael is cool but rude; Michelangelo is a party dude.
