Something wrong with my computers ram Help please D:

So I tried to install some new ram in my computer today and when I turned it on after putting it in the fans spun REALLY REALLY REALLY fast so I quickly turned it off because something was obviously wrong, so I switched the new ram out and put my old ones back in. When I turned it back on there was no display being shown and there was a series of beeps 1-3-1-1, when I looked up the error code for a dell it has something to do with DRAM refresh error?

I tried to contact Dell but apparently my warranty expired so they basically just told me to go fuck myself.

I looked around a bit on the internet to try and figure out how to fix this and everything I've read has told me to reseat the ram, but I've tried all 7 slots in various combinations and it still isn't working not even the ones that didn't have anything in them before.. wtf did I do?

    Any ideas?

Clear CMOS? Try with just 1 RAM too for now

What kind of RAM are the new and old? Maybe you tried to insert 1600 MHZ RAM on a motherboard that only supports 1200 (for exemple), a clear cmos should settle that tho.

I just checked the ram I bought, it says its 1600, and the machine is from 2005 so I think that might be it, how do I clear CMOS?

And the new ram is DDR3 I think the old stuff is DDR2 but I'm not sure. Definitely wasn't suppose to put this ram in the comp tho lol.

What's the model of your computer, I'll try to find information.

As for clearing CMOS, unplug the computer, take out the circular battery, wait 5 seconds, put the battery back in. (There might be a jumper near the battery as well, change its position for a few seconds and put it back in original position)

That computer requires ECC Registred memory 400 MHZ, not the kind of RAM you bought.

    These should work

Not to put you down but sometimes it is the most simply thing. Make sure you are putting in the ram the right way, having the claps down, etc. Switch your jumper, or do like sruon said. I guess you are not touching the ram in the wrong spot ether correct?

I would try one at a time also considering some older computers don't like different kinds of ram at the same time. Also helps if you have the right kind of ram lol.

Yeah I'm not trying to use the new ram, I'm just trying with the old ram I tried each one in the first slot by itself and still nothing, I also removed the battery, I'm definitely putting the ram in the right way and clamping them. Guess I'll try every slot 1 by 1.

It might be helpful to point out that the system sounds as if its starting up while the beeping goes on and after it

The order I would do things are this:

    1. Unplug the power from the power supply and wait about a minute. Then plug it back up and try turning it on.

    2. Unplug the power, take all the ram out and test 1 old piece of ram on each slot. But make sure it's the same memory stick you're trying. If you do that and nothing works then try the other old memory stick.

Tested every stick in every slot and I get the same error beep every time. Tried booting without the ram and the display still won't appear yet I get the same ram error even when there is nothing in there. I'm going to try taking the battery out for more than 5 seconds this time..

You are handling the RAM correctly right? Damaging the memory module is rare but it does happen. You didn't happen to run around the house with socks on the carpet before grabbing the ram? Like i said its rare but it can/has happened.

Yeah I am, and I have wood floors and haven't worn socks all day so I don't think I damaged them.

The weird thing is tho, if I put one stick in the first dimm slot and one stick in the 5th or 6th, I get

Green-Yellow-Green-Yellow on the Diagnostic lights, which apparently means that Memory modules are detected, but a memory configuration or compatibility error exists

But if I put them in slots 1 and 2, I get Green-Yellow-Yellow-Yellow

Which means No memory modules are detected.

And I cannot run the Dell Diagnostic thing, because I cannot get anything to display on the screen so i can't see wtf I'm doing, I guess this means my board is fried..?

How did you even get the ddr3 ram into a ddr2 slot? I thought the gap in the bottom of the ram was in a different position and it wouldn't fit unless you forced it.

I only had to use slightly more force than it takes to get the DDR2 stick in so I just kind of assumed it was okay, which was the big mistake

Well by forcing it in i would think you probably killed the slots.

Well I went back and tried to see if I actually did force it in, and you can only set half down at one time, the other half you cannot lock so I guess I shorted it by turning it on when only half was in?

I didn't even read the DDR2 / DDR3 part of your message lol.

Last time I did this the motherboard died.

I bring bad news my friend.. you just fried your board, and/or bent/broke/shorted the pins inside the memory sockets.

Time to test which parts are still working, and buy/build a new machine if you don't have one already.

Yeah I'm just going with the assumption the shit is shot, I tested my graphics card/ram/hdd in another computer and it all works

So I just need to get a processor, case, power supply, and motherboard..

Anyone have any suggestions? I was looking at http://www.newegg.com/Product/ComboD...t=Combo.404705

Anyone have a suggestion on a cheap case/PSU?
