Having nearly died in Feb, I can honestly say I am afraid of dying. I am scared to die slowly from CF. It sucks losing the ability to breath and have everything you enjoy doing taken away from you.

When I was 3, I had this conversation with my mom, while we were taking a walk. We passed a house, and I stopped dead in my tracks. My mom tried to get me to continue walking, but I stared at the house, transfixed. My mom said I had a very solemn look on my face, and stared at the house as if in very deep thought. After a long silence, I said...

"I... I used to live there."

My mom told me, "no honey, we've never lived there..."

I replied, "No, I used to live there. I wrote stories in that house."

My mom started getting a little freaked out, and asked me "when did you live there?"

The only reply I could come up with was, "Before..."

Another somewhat similar story involves my 2 year old nephew. Recently we were showing him some old photos. Upon seeing a photo of my grandmother (she died in 2003), he immediately responded "I know her!"

Of course, he had never met her, and he has also never seen a photo of her. My sister responded "No sweetie, you never got to meet her."

He immediately shot back, "Yes I have! That's Great Nana! Nana's mommy!"

My sister was shocked, and asked "How do you know that?"

He replied, "She visits me, after I go to sleep. She plays games with me and tells me stories."

Another night, my sister was traveling home with my nephew during a bad storm. She was scared shitless. A tree branch fell and caused another car to swerve and nearly hit my sister head on. My sister pulled over and started crying - she was terrified. My nephew spoke up, "Don't cry mommy. Great Nana is here. She's keeping us safe."

True stories... and they really blow my mind.

I like the way you think.

Also I'd like to redact my previous post: It stands as is but I'm also comfortable with the idea of dying as well. As much as I hold life itself dear on the idea that nothing exists after the one life we have, at the same time, life generally sucks ass. (Who I am and the way I think is textbook Weltshmerz.) That said, between clawing moments of happiness between periods of crap, I view death as a release from a burden (living) just as much as I view life as a precious thing not worth squandering.

I am afraid death doesnt scare me.

Which is fine, since I still enjoy life to its fullest.

I am only 21 years old but I have had the luck (feel free to call it good or bad luck, fucked up probabilities or whatever you please) to be damn close of dying three times. One of them, the incident was so fast I hadnt got time to feel anything other than vertigo, but the other two were long enough moments to have plenty of time to feel scared. However, I remember perfectly I was more annoyed and irritated than anything, thinking I was going to die in such a stupid and meaningless manner.

When I think over it, the main thing that upsets me about the posibility of an early death, is the damage it could make to those that love me. Mostly my brother, as it fucking up his life, enthusiasm and attitude to life is the last thing I would want to hurt. It also bothers me what can be summed up with the sentence Roy Batty says before dying in that Philip K. Dick book:

"... All those moments will be lost in time, like tears in rain..."

I am also fine with nothing happening after we all die, which is pretty cool since I would say the odds for any other possibility are ridicuously low. If there is anything, I will try to live it to its fullest as well, I promise.

That's spot on. It's pretty fascinating.

It's weird, because I don't remember saying the words specifically to my mom, but I do remember seeing the house - and being overcome with "snapshots" of a life that wasn't this one.

I can still clearly remember the thought of living there with 3-4 other people, maybe more... but not being particularity close to any of them. Maybe it was a boarding house. The floors were heavily worn, and the furnishing was poor. I'd say late 1800s or early 1900s.

No memories of a family, just writing and being horrendously frustrated with it. I felt a sense of bitterness about it, and seemed pretty miserable. I even have a face with the person... he resembled a really pissed off Zachary Taylor, almost identically.

One guy who lived in the house was a major nuisance, and caused distraction. I think "my guy" was just a bitter, lonely introvert who struggled with his work.

So if this is indeed some form of reincarnation, not much has changed, except I've learned to be a lady's man.

    Or not.

(And seriously, I'm not bullshitting with all these details. Not claiming they mean anything, but I did have these "visions" as a kid, and the memory of them stuck with me.)

lol are we really going to include this reincarnation scam into this thread? Doesn't seem like the right place to talk about it. Chalk it up to religion and be done with it.

death doesnt scare me in its abstraction. its only when i forcibly apply it to myself that i begin to feel the overwhelming sense of dread that comes with experience ending. on a day to day basis i pay no mind to its lurking reach despite taunting it with many forms of idiocy.

i would love to think that i will go on somewhere else postmortem, but am resigned to the notion in which i will have significantly contributed to existence in some manner.

Its nothing amusing or really worth going over with, but here it is. Editted to spoiler the wall of text no one cares about.

    Spoiler: show
First one happened when I was 12 or 13 years old. We were at the beach, one that is known for its notorious waves but almost never sea currents. This day sea was particularly brave so my brother (two years younger than me) and I were told to not go further than a few steps in. We were happily playing with the waves and I guess we slowly moved further and further into the sea, to a point where we got caught for some moderate sea current that just were too much for us. We shouted as we were getting pulled deeper and deeper and my father came to get us but waves and the current were too strong, so he had to pick one of us and he obviously got my brother. By the time he left him at the sand I was really far in lol, fucking fighting with the waves trying to use them to get me to the sand but the current was just overwhelming and I could barely keep breathing while getting owned, drinking what I thought was half of the sea. I got pulled into some rocks and thought I was done, so frustrated I could do nothing to get out of there and pretty much annoyed that was going to be it, but not really afraid. I guess it wouldnt have been a horrible death anyway. Some gentleman I didnt know and my father got there and after a lot of fighting with current and waves and rocks they were able to pull me out of that hell, but it took them at least 5-6 minutes as I was completely exhausted and although I didnt want to give up I couldnt help them at all.

Second one was really, really stupid. I was out with some friends, drinking beers, most likely discussing some really deep topics, and some really silly ones. Saving the world. Anyway, after a couple hours one of my friends got sick and started puking. Another friend and I decided it was a nice idea to explore an inhabited and long time abandoned building that was pretty close to where we were drinking. So, while the other guy recovered, we left him and another friend babysitting him and went there. Jumped the fence, got there, started fooling around. There was nothing interesting so we decided to go up some concrete stairs to the third level. What was our surprise when over half way up we feel the stairs shake and start bending, slowly, doing some strong sound as if a big water tank was blowing out. I was like "fuuuuuuuck". We obviously stopped moving and it seemed to get stable and stop. We talked to each other, recognizing what was going on. Decided one of us would stay there and the other would start going back down, so we kinda distributed the weight. Keep in mind we were fairly drunk and the situations was really unexpected. He turned and hadnt gone two steps down when the concrete stair fucking collapsed and we both fell down from almost a third floor and onto the ground. I remember feeling the butterflies in my belly and thinking ("a tomar por culo todo" which should be something like "fuck it all" for you). Couples secs later felt a huge hit and my whole body getting smashed by the steps that fell down with us and cut by a lot of rocks and shit that was on the ground floor. However I could get up and check my friend was also ok. We were really lucky as not only we didnt die or got our head or back fucked by those concrete rungs, but we could get up and get the fuck out surprisingly fast with all the adrenaline, without knowing how we had made it with just cuts and injuries all around the body but nothing broken or really serious. What hurted the most was getting the smalls rocks out of the leg, arms, etc... skin and healing it, but yeah.

Last one was this last summer. I was out with several friends and cousins, had been drinking as well, but not much, yet. We were moving to a different pub or disco, I dont remember the specifics of the move. Anyway, I was walking a little behind the group. Most of them were at the other side of the street, and I was 1/3 through the pedestrian crossing when I notice a car is coming really fast to me, in the wrong direction. I wasnt expecting it so barely saw it coming. As I said I felt a lot of vertigo as it was getting terribly fast to me, jumped to try and evade it, and it seemed as if the driver wanted to get me because the car turned to me and I got caught. I remember before being hit and while I was trying to get out of its way I thought it was some douches from which I had had to defend my cousin and get into a fight the Friday before. I almost evaded it, only barely got hit, but wow. The strenght of the hit was overwhelming, I got thrown to the air to take some flying lessons and score the ground aparently about 18-20 feet away. Luckily again, nothing broken (well, 3 teeth were partially broken ; ; ), but got some wounds that pretty much killed the rest of the summer as most of them took over a month to heal. Driver was a guy that was really drunk and probably stoned and drugged to all hell. He didnt stop to see what happened and assist, but rather escaped. Sadly for him, police found him not too far away (as it is just a 8000 people village, not very big at all), in the port, crying and probably wondering about what he just did or where to hide or something, idk. Aparently he was about to be acepted in the police so he fucked up his career at the very least, he may be in prison though, as they are starting to get really serious about traffic accidents while being drunk here in Spain. I still havent gotten any compensation as the case is still being worked on the courts.

Will have to excuse my poor English as it isnt my first language :/

I find it amusing that a lot of people in this thread seem to think fearing death is something only pussies do and they're MEN! Inevitably leading to the answer "No, I'm not afraid of death".

Yet, if faced with a life-or-death situation, or if they're getting murdered or something, most all of them would either beg for their lives or pray that they get out of the situation alive. I bet most all of you are afraid of catching a life-threatening disease, as well.

Most young people claim they're not afraid of death, hence why a lot of them act careless and make stupid mistakes. At one point or another they all come to the realization that they're not immortal, though, and that life is a very fragile thing that can be taken away from you or shatter at any time. For most it come when someone close to them die.

ITT: Niggas getting it twisted again.

Being afraid doesn't equate to being a pussy, in fact its completely normal. Everyone, regardless of fear or no fear, has an automatic fight or flight response when facing impending death. All were asking is if you are scared to death OF death, what are your reasons? I don't know about you but I am finding some of the reasons for the fear reasonable and am surprised that this thread isn't spiraling into oblivion yet.

Its not about being a bitch or about flexing your girth, because lets be honest, none of us are eager to die or we'd be doing something to expedite the process, rather than typing on BG. Like I said, I am not afraid of death, call me strange, emo, weird whatever, but it does not scare me. Then again im not 15 and worried about stroking my first piece of ass. I honestly don't look down on anyone afraid of death, because at one point I too was in the boat.

My unwillingness to die right now is 100% dependent on my 10 year old daughter, everything else doesn't matter, but like I said the act itself does not scare me whatsoever. Perhaps seeing someone I care about literally die and take their last breath in front of me dispelled the mystique. When shit like that happens you realize that if someone you considered a hero can do it, then who are you to puss out and cry and snivel about it? I'm just saying man, that there are 2 sides to every coin and you shouldn't assume everyone has the same mentally weak make up as you. Go to church if you scared bitch nigga.

Anyway, I just want to know if you are or aren't scared and if you are or aren't, then why? Its really that simple. Having e-pissing contests isn't exactly my cup of tea. I don't look down on anyone being fearful or scared of the unknown, shits situational.

I'm more annoyed by the concept of death than afraid of it. We should be past this stage already. Too much bullshit keeps getting in the way of progress.

I'm afraid of uncertainty. I want the birds to sing and angels to cry when I die. Most likely, we're all going to end up in the big blue and that won't matter. But if something different happens, fuck if I don't know what it is. If we're still able of conscious unconscious awareness, in our "minds eye" after we die, fuck if they take all my shit out and I can feel it. I'd like to know what happens, thanks. Gives me the rest of my life to take it in and deal with it.

    You want a reason? Ok.

Yes, I'm afraid of dying. Why? Because I like living. Life is a precious thing worth holding on to. It can slip away at any moment without expecting it, or shatter in a thousand pieces for one reason or another. Life is delicate, and like all other delicate things should be handled with care.

What terrifies me the most, though, is the realization that the way my life is now, odds are my current existence 150 years from now won't have mattered for much. Odds are people won't throw me much of a thought, and my fingerprint on the world will be next to meaningless. What terrifies me the most, is not death itself, but being forgotten. Once I've made my mark on the world - be it through kids or somehow managing to get my name written in history - I probably won't be afraid of THAT anymore. I will, however, still fight for what I hold dear, and life is one of them.

I'm young, I've much to accomplish still. So yes, until I've accomplished what I strive to accomplish in life, I will be afraid of death. I don't want to leave things unfinished, life included.

edit: The uncertainty of death don't scare me. I don't care what happens after life. I'm an Atheist. What matters to me is my legacy. As long as I've made an impact on the world one way or another (children, for example), I won't care. Personally I believe there's nothing after death. That in itself doesn't scare me. I wouldn't want to live forever anyway. Like I said before, what matters to me is legacy and what you accomplish in life, not whatever happens once you're dead. That holds no meaning. A man's legacy lasts long after his life ends.

As for my funeral, I want to be cremated. I refuse to roam the earth again in the inevitable zombie apocalypse!

The biggest thing about dying to me would have to be the thought of being forgotten and not being able to make new memories with people I care about.

Hey man, zombies are awesome. You cant deny your destiny! Also, your reasons for your fear are understandable, you're not THAT big a pussy and I only judged you once, kidding. Everything you listed is how I used to feel, so I am all too familiar with how youre feeling.

At the end of the day all we can do for our loved ones is leave good memories, those are the things that truly last forever. The way I see it is that as long as you are enjoying your friends, family and not taking life for granted you are good. Too many people assume 'tomorrow' will be there forever. I feel you brah.
