Had a family gathering today, and my mom brought me some old papers she found from 1994-1995... the stats of the little league baseball teams I played on those years. One of the parents was obsessed with keeping track, and he gave us all a printout at the end of each year.
I had some recollection of my stats (absurdly high OBP/SB, no power), but didn't think I was very good overall. I couldn't pitch, couldn't field AT ALL, and everything I hit stayed less than 5 feet off the ground.
Looking back on my stats, and calculating some of the "newer", more used ones (OBP, SLG, OPS), I discovered I was actually a very valuable offensive player.
1994:
15 hits / 36 at bats
13 runs / 7 RBI
5 doubles, no triples, no HR
17 walks, 5 strikeouts
7 stolen bases
.417 BA, .603 OBP, .556 SLG, 1.159 OPS
Very solid year, but I was one of the older kids on the team.
The problem I had the next year, is my age forced me up to the next level of little league, so I was facing players who have had growth spurts, were a year older than me, and suddenly fastballs were a lot faster. I was 13, but probably about 4 feet, 6 inches. I struggled against the older pitchers during our practice games, but always managed to have a good eye. My coach told me to use my height to my advantage, and stay low. The season that followed:
1995:
0 hits, 4 at bats
29 runs / 0 RBI
47 walks / 2 strikeouts (ROFL)
26 stolen bases
.000 BA, .922 OBP, .000 SLG, .922 OPS
Pitchers fucking hated me for it, but it got the job done. In all fairness, I gave a good amount of runs back with my shitty fielding. It was awful to the point where I'd play RF, and if a LHH came up, they'd shift the LFer to CF, and the CF to RF, and just have me guard the deep RF corner, leaving a huge gap in LF. I simply couldn't track a fly ball. I was slightly below average at 2B and SS, but didn't fit in there, since our players were exceptional at those positions.
In the championship game, I came in as a pinch hitter, walked on four pitches, stole second and third, then came in on a sacrifice bunt. We won 2-1.
For the two years combined, I had a Pujols-esque 1.260 OPS.
In other ventures, I tried, and failed, hockey. I stayed away from football, because the practices seemed like way too much commitment.
Beyond that, I just stayed the fuck away and played kick ball, Nintendo and Hide and Seek.
