Im looking for a new CPU fan for my i7 965. Over the last few days its borked itself. Was looking for some suggestions on what I should get since I know next to nothing about this stuff. Thanks!

Was it a stock fan?
Thermalright Venemous X-RT

Might as well get one of the best heatsinks for that expensive CPU. Less heat means longer life span.
People use the stock CPU fans?
It's an i7 965 and he says he knows almost nothing about this stuff. He most likely was still using the stock fan, or is really rich. Most people who get the 965 are enthusiasts who know their stuff.People use the stock CPU fans?
OP, I have a cogage true spirit and it's a pretty good cooler imo. Especially for it's price. (I got microcenter to price match it down to 40.) Corsair H50 is also pretty good from what I've heard/seen.
<_< y u do dis?

All these need extremely huge cases. But all 3 are good on low noise/High heat dissipation.

When I upgrade my cpu and mobo this year I'll be staying away from any tower-like things like my tuniq or the 2nd one you posted.
I'm either going water cooled or an open and accessible fan. Thing was a nightmare to install and is annoying to clean. It attracts probably 80% of the dust my case takes in by itself.
Plus, it's just too big. Makes it really hard to work around and access certain things.
Wasn't a stock fan, was a coolmaster pro that I asked be put in it. But I guess sometimes down the road it stopped worked and the CPU was idling at high 70'C. and even a game like wow was pushing it to 100'C. I have no idea how long it was going on like this, but got a new fan in there thats now keeping it an optimal heat.
I spoke to the tech guy I usually have come over and fix stuff, and he recommended Zalman. so I picked up the top tier one he suggested for now. Gonna research other fan's and maybe have a diff one put in, but at least I don't need to worry about setting my computer on fire. Wonder how much CPU life i killed by not realizing the fan was borked sooner. Computer still benchmarks the same so I guess I saved it in time lol.
W/the Zalman it idles now at around low/mid 30's and loads to high 40's/low 50's
That Corsair water cooler is shit. The Noctua isn't bad, but its big brother is the real dominator (the N-DH14, pricier though).
Can't really go wrong with a TRUE, but it's definitely worth slapping a pair of S-FDB fans on it.
I have a Tuniq and like it alright (socket 775 model), but it's hueger than XBox, and really inconvenient to mount/fiddle with.
When people recommend Zalman, it makes me cringe (since most talk about the silly old round ones). The latest models featuring a more traditional heatpipe tower are decent, but the old round ones, besides looking cool, are utter garbage, and overpriced garbage at that.
If I wanted an utter maniac of a cooler, size, weight, and sanity be damned, the short list is the ThermalRight IFX-14 and Noctua N-DH14. Cram 3 fans on either and shoot for the stars.
If sanity matters, I'd probably go with a TRUE-C, Zalman CNPS10X (probably a Flex or Performa), or a Noctua NH-U12P.
H50 isn't shit. It's not as good as a custom kit but it definitely is not shit. It gets temps around the same as the Megahalems/U12P/other high end air coolers but with the added benefit of not having to worry much about ambient temps (especially useful with high ambients).
Could probably find one for $50-60 btw.
Will vouch for the Corsair H50. I use it and love it.
Keeps my OC'ed i7 930 around ~38-41 idle and ~48-52 under load. Just gotta make sure you follow the instructions when setting it up and turn off the Smart Fan option in your BIOS. Just let the fan go full blast for best performance.
It's a closed system. You're just as much at risk as using air cooling.Unable to out-perform air cooling with the serious potential impact of failure would make me consider it shit.
If you're going to bother with the additional risks of water cooling, you'd goddamn well better outperform similarly-priced options which are less risky.
BUT YOU ARE PUTTING WATER NEAR ELECTRONICS WHATS THE MATTER WITH YOU
Spoiler: show
Pretty sure when I upgrade my cpu/mobo/ram later this year I'm going to attempt water cooling for the first time. Total noob at it, have no idea what to do, should be fun. Best part is the price of the gtx480 plates, mmmm 200$. Just gonna buy a bunch of koolance parts throw them in a box and hope it works.
you're not subtle enough.
