Problem with PS3 and New TV

    Hello!

I recently bought a brand new 47" LG LE5400 TV and a PS3. It has been out of the box for about 3 days and i noticed that when i was watching a dvd, my screen would flash on and off. Now i am going through hdmi and i know the ps3 does the up conversion but this flashing happened about 15-18 times throughout the dvd playing. It was sort of the way the tv flashes when you first do the setup for the ps3 when it scans for what resolution you have. Is this common? Cause I was really starting to get annoyed. This also happens when i am on the main ps3 screen, where you pick your setting and/or looking to log into the ps network. Is this problem with my tv? ps3? or hdmi cables? I have asked around at the store and they said it always happens on the ps3, and another said it was because my tv setting for my ps3 is not on automatic or something like that, so that the tv's resolution acts up. Any one has any advice how to fix this or what to do, I would reallly appreciate it! Thx for your time guys!

I think its a problem with your hdmi cable. My ps3 does this sometimes too although its very rare. I have a 46" sony tv.

Oh wow, with the hdmi cable? that sucks, the cable was a $70 rocketfish hdmi cable from bestbuy, it was one of the cheaper ones, unlike the monster cables, but is it really with the cable? hmmm well i'll fiddle around with it, at least its not the tv, i hope lol

Mine does this with the cable box when the HDMI cable's not plugged in exactly right (usually after the cat's knocked the TV slightly). Nowt a wire jiggle doesn't fix on ours.

My PS3 does this some (maybe a few times a movie) when being run through my receiver over HDMI. I don't recall it ever doing it in my old setup with HDMI straight to the TV for video + optical audio. Didn't do it during short tests going directly to the TV or PC monitor either.

I've tried multiple HDMI cables, including ones I know are good (as in, my HTPC or 360 is using them with no issue, swap to PS3, and have the problem).

Been told that it's a reasonably common issue with PS3s, but I dunno.

Edit: When I called about it they said it was switching between layers on the DVD and thats what causes the flickering.

nothing you can do about it, just how it is

That's...not what it is. Not in my case anyway. I'm talking I can (occasionally) have the screen flicker/drop out several times in a minute, then do nothing for the rest of the movie. Or crop up several more times. It's very random. It'll also do it when playing games, or audio CDs, or just sitting there at the menu.

They might be talking about the video dropping in and out between things like previews, menu, feature presentation, etc, which can be normal.

Yeah, you got raped on HDMI cables. I bought a 25 foot HDMI cable for EIGHT dollars.

Anyway, one of your issues could be HDCP status since it's flickering like that. When you use the upscale function, it turns HDCP on for a handshake (regardless if it's needed). This was an issue with a few Westinghouse TVs a few years back. Westinghouse blamed Sony and vice versa, never really sure what came from that. Point being is that this sounds just like that issue. Make sure your PS3's firmware is up to date, same for your TV.
