I gotta agree with the article, seems really dumb to exclude your exclusive partner out of the white phone on release. You realize how many people are gonna show up at a AT&T and want a white one, just to be turned away? I can't see AT&T being OK with this at all...

At any rate the activation of an iphone is like a 3 step process which includes changing the serial number on your at&t to match the new phone (does nothing to you as an iphone user), connecting the phone to iTunes so it will actually display the home screen etc, and putting an active SIM card on said phone so that it registers on the network...apple could do 2 out of those three before it gets to your house but the phone won't be "activated" til you put a working micro SIM on it. Which means after you get the iPhone at your home there will be some contacting at&t that has to be done in order to switch your shit over to the micro SIM you will get with the phone. This doesn't mean talking to a live person though.

I just called apple, and the lady said that they'll take orders over the phone or online. They'll take the store down for a couple of hours to add the iphone and then open it up. She said it usually starts for pre orders around 8am PST. I advise to take with a grain of salt, because she wasn't too certain.
