It's not as much as a "death grip fix" as it is a "more accurate display bars fix". And in that, it actually works very well. This update was not suppose to fix the death grip issues, but instead show a much more accurate display of your reception. Basically, it kinda seems like Apple is trying to throw AT&T under the bus here, lol.
According to testing, as long as your 3G reception is good where you are, the iPhone 4, even in death grip, still actually out performs all the previous models of iPhones. It only affects you in places where the signal is already poor to start with. So Anandtech testing shows that the iPhone 4 is still the better performer, regardless of the amount of bars shown on your phone.
So basically, Apple is kinda telling the truth here. iPhone 4 still > all the previous iPhones and that the external bands DO work. But the better signal bars actually do illustrate the death grip more than ever now. And still doesn't fix the issues in poor signal errors where death grip can still kill your service.

The big media event supposed to start in 5 minutes. I really wonder what they are going to do. Reports are that even some high level execs have no clue what Jobs is going to say at this conference.
Whatever you guys find out post it here. I'm out on the road so I'll spam refresh lol.
stream talking about the conference:

blah blah blah...Steve just talking about ya, there is problems, nothing ever perfect at the start, phone still better than the 2nd coming of christ, etc etc.
saying other phones got it too lol
I've never heard Jobs sound so much like a politician before....
Looks like Apple is still going with the "it's not a problem" defense.
Edit : I can see Apple is fudging the truth abit there, since they're apparently listing only the AT&T return rates, and not the return rates for people who bought the phone thru them
And... he just said the problem is people aren't buying cases/bumpers.
ok....that was a major setup for free bumpers.
claiming that the 3GS success is related to "All the cases available at launch"
free case wow.
