Quick Question: CPU/GPU Power Supply & Power Requirements

Okay, quick question. I haven't changed out the motherboard or cpu in my machine for years now and I finally got around to picking up an i7-930 with new Mobo and RAM to match. While I'm confident I can put everything together, and that everything fits together fine, I noticed on the Newegg label for my i7 that it mentioned "130W". Now, I don't know what that 130W means. I am assuming it is the power requirement for the chip (?), and that worries me a little.

Here's why: My currently installed PSU is an XTreme Power Plus 550W. My currently installed GPU is an ATI Radeon HD5750 with a documented 450W power requirement. 450+130=580... Is this going to be an issue? My old CPU was an ancient AMD Athlon x2 3800+, and used practically no power that I knew of, so I didn't even think about it when purchasing the i7.

    Thanks

Edit: This is the processor I got, http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819115225

The 450W PSU requirement takes into account what the rest of your system will likely use. A 5750, per spec, is around 18W at idle, and 86W under load.

Hard to say with your old CPU, as there were three versions of it, at 35W, 65W, and 89W.

Chances are that you'll be fine with the PSU you have, since your GPU really isn't that high end. If you had a more enthusiast oriented card like a 5850, then it may be more of a concern that that'd be somewhere around 200W under load. There are cards that'll pull 300W or more under load as well, such as the Fermi based ones.

I mean, a new PSU wouldn't necessarily be a bad idea...but you can probably do fine with what you have, provided you aren't running a ton of HDDs n' all to boot.

Awesome, thanks a bunch. I'm only running one 200Gb hdd, and nothing else in expansion slots aside from the gpu. It sounds like it should work fine then. Hurrah!
