Computer won't start with new GPU.

    Hello.

I got new computer build just couple days ago. And it seems that problem should be in either psu or gpu, my friend also said it could be mobo. First spoiler includes what happened day it crashed. The second spoiler includes my system specs. Please, I would like to hear opinions from you before taking further actions.

    Spoiler: show
I got my new computer on monday. I built it, installed windows and installed some basic programs like firewall, antivir and firefox. Then I updated gpu drivers. After while I was thinking about testing gaming capabilities and launched wow as test, which I copied from old harddrive during installs.

So everything was fine, readjusted resolution to match my desktop resolution. Then I moved to check sound options. While I was adjusting quality, my computer just shutdown. First I thought "Oh damn. please, not the powersupply". This happened about 2-3h after use and I did reboot system after installing drivers. It was quite late night, so I went to sleep and continued next day.

Next day I did some tests. Mobo had power led on when power was turned on. The fans moved a little if I tried to turn power on. If I took GPU off, the rest of the system would turn on correctly. But my mobo doesn't have integrated GPU, so I borrowed friend's nvidia 7900gt which was half broke, it would bluescreen if you install any drivers. So far I've disabled 7900 from the device manager, which seems to work well for temporaly use.

We tested my GPU on friend's computer, it also did same to his as it did to mine. Nothing wouldn't happen when power was turned on. He has 500w power.

    Specs
    Spoiler: show

    Mobo: Asus M4A77TD
CPU: AMD Athlon II X4 630
    Memory: Kingston DDR3 1333mhz 2x2gb
GPU: XFX Radeon HD 4850 512mt
    PSU: Antec Basiq BP550Plus 550w
HDD SATA: Western Digital 5000 Caviar blue 500gb
HDD IDE: Maxtor Diamond 9 80gb
    DVD SATA: Sony AD-5240S-0B DVD+-RW
    Case: Antec VSK-2000 ATX

So far I've googled and searched if anyone had similar problem with their GPU and come up with no good results. I think my that my GPU got broke, it doesn't smell burned at all though. Brother says that my system has insufficient power, which I also tested by stripping off dvd and extra harddrive, but nothing changed. Before even ordering all this I did check if my power would be enough by using power supply calculator and estimated power usage would be around 450w.

Currently I would mail my GPU back for examination. My brother suggested that I could ask some of my friend with over 600w PSU to try my card with their system to see if my PSU isn't big enough, but would this put friend's computer at danger?

So should I test it at friend's computer or just mail it. Or do you have any other ideas or suggestions I could try? Please share your thoughts.

Unless the it's shorting out or something like that, it shouldn't physically/electrically hurt your friend's computer to try it with a larger PSU.

Judging from how you're talking about it, I'm assuming you had the parts or computer shipped to you. In that case, I'd check for any physical damage to the GPU or mother board (capacitors/transistors broken off, scratches, etc) if you haven't already.

Also, do you have a way to check for CPU/system temp, and have you tested your RAM to make sure it's good?

I did check CPU temperatures yesterday and they were good. But at this moment its impossible to check GPU temperatures. I did examine GPU for any damages, but didn't notice any visible damage. I could double check mobo again. And yes, I bought them in parts and built them myself.

I would just RMA the graphics card to whoever you bought it from.. sounds like it's defective.

I blame those damned couriers! Ya, just contact the place you bought it from and request a replacement. If you bought the computer prebuilt then i'm definately not suprised that a video card was damaged.

It definitely sounds like a bad card since it's happened on two separate machines, plus you can boot with a different card (same slot, I'm assuming?)
