He was implying the cat should understand what games are and electricity is and what a video game system is and that there will be consequences for pushing a particular button or pulling out a particular cord that would turn the game off. So many things wrong with the whole sentiment.

I didn't read his post, heh. Also no to your question. Cats are extremely intelligent in their own right, but just because they don't understand electricity doesn't make them stupid. A lot of the animals we take for granted are very intelligent, oddly enough.

(No, not implying you too believe an animal is dumb for not knowing what electricity is, just in case.)

Apparently, you have never seen how important a pet is to someone who has nobody else. I'd say there's more of those "least important life forms" around that have saved the sanity of the old, injured, sick or alone than you'd ever think. Similar benefits accrue to pet owners in general.

Also in turn, the act traumatized the owner of said kitten, which qualifies as an assault in my book. Even treating them as aesthetic property, having someone violently destroy them in front of you is disgusting and criminal.

People often develop similar connections with inanimate objects. Ripping the head off a kid's favorite teddy bear may affect the kid just as much as killing his kitten. A sentimental bond is just that- Sentimental.

My objection is that the Animal Cruelty laws, and the general public's view of the subject, are largely based on sentiment rather than reason. Obviously, I strongly disagree with this. I'm not saying that the guy shouldn't be punished, and I'm not saying the owner shouldn't be pissed. All I'm saying is that people need to put down their torches and pitchforks and see his offense for what it really is: destruction of property.

Regarding the guy's mental state, he should be evaluated for anger management issues NOT because it was a kitten that he "broke", but that he broke anything at ALL as a result of his video game being accidentally unplugged.

There is a special part of your brain that most people possess that allow you to have compassion and a conscious when it comes to living animals. This is a different part of the brain from the part that handles how you interact with non-living things.

In the privacy of my own mind, I can allow myself to get a bit teary-eyed when a character I like in a story dies, or when I think of the dog I had when I grew up and how she died when I was ~20, but when it comes to making decisions in the real world, I put that stuff aside and think of what these things really are and how much objective value they have to my well-being.

I couldn't care less about what people think, but I want them to at least ACT rationally in all things that affect others. Our laws, especially, should be strictly centered in objectivity.

As for the people screaming for the guys head for killing a cat, I guess I just enjoy pointing out how misguided and illogical their rage is.

Except AGAIN you are ignoring the fact that even on a completely objective logical path of thinking a LIVING ANIMAL is still different from an inanimate object and thus should be treated differently in the eyes of the law.

I agree with you the extreme rage that comes out comes from a place of compassion and sentimental feelings towards cute animals.

But the point still remains that animal cruelty laws exist because the law recognizes the difference between a living animal and an inanimate object.
