Maybe he masturbated in front of small children, and so god killed a kitten in front of them?

Could be. Could be. Quick arrest god for animal cruelty! Religion is the source of all animal sacrifice in the world!

Khamsin can you merge this thread now with the MMA guy since he ripped out his partners heart because of religion and not drugs?

So you should be able to kill as many animals as you want, as long as you own them?

Or torture the animals we eat, rather than humanely euthanize them?

I'm guessing animal rights is more out of respect for the pain that our fellow living creatures feel than out of sentiment. Of all living things on this planet, it only applies to things that can feel, afterall.

There's no need to inflict pain on animals, anyway, even the ones we raise to eat/breed/milk/shear/render/etc.

I once heard that animals feel pain, but don't quote me on that.

Kittens > Chicken ; even if you're looking for some sort of racial fuel.

But the point still remains that animal cruelty laws exist because the law recognizes the difference between a living animal and an inanimate object.
Um, that's exactly why I'm saying that the Animal Cruelty laws are flawed. Living or not living is simply a characteristic of an object. That characteristic by itself does not add or subtract any objective value to an object. The Law should be based on objective values so that they may protect a wider scope of people.

Why would you think that living things should have special treatment just BECAUSE they are living?

If I bash up somebody's computer until it's in pieces should I be receiving the same punishment as if I bash up somebody's pet until it's in pieces?

One experiences pain and suffering, one doesn't etc. Even if you are cold enough to believe these to be equal, the world is an incredibly bitter place if you only consider humans worthy of existence.

No. A computer is a useful tool and probably costs more, and so, should carry a steeper penalty.

O.o Humans aren't special either. It's just that I have good reasons to treat them favorably regardless of their direct value to me. Namely, it's because the laws that protect them from me also protect me from them, and to invalidate those laws would subject me to a higher level of danger than I would be comfortable with.

As a human, you should be able to recognize that a cat, or parrot, or squirrel can feel pain.

As such, should you act like a heartless asshole, only concerned about your well being, should you extend that concern to only your own species, or should you respect the instinctual urge to not be hurt that any animal feels?

I don't understand what the problem is. Treating humans as more valueable than other animals is not mutually exclusive to putting other animals above the level of mere inanimate objects.

Everyone knows you're supposed to get punished more if you kill a cat/kitten than say, a dog/puppie/wolf/giraffe. If you don't believe me, you haven't been lurking on 4chan enough.

I already said that being alive is a meaningless characteristic in determining something's value. Logically, it follows that the ability to feel pain is at least equally meaningless.

Incidentally, one could contend that human beings without proper empathetic abilities are a threat to the human species, and thus should be eliminated when found.
