    PS3 heat help

Just bought a ps3 last winter, didn't notice any heat until it started to get warmer out a few weeks ago. Looked at a few reviews on newegg, they didn't offer anything good.

They both got crap reviews for the most part

you really shouldn't need any of that stuff, mine is left on for weeks at a time, and it tends to blow out some warmish air, nothing that you could use as an alternative hair dryer like my 360, but yeah..

just have it out in an open area so the heat isn't hitting any walls or anything and coming back at your system.

Keep it off the carpet or stand it up if you can't put it anywhere else and you really should be fine.

From what i heard those devices do more harm than good. When the PS3 gets hot you will hear the fans ramp up but until then you shouldnt worry because it should be inside the temp normal parameters.

USB fans that draw power from your PS3 will cause it to get hotter rather than helping it to get cooler from the extra load on the power supply. Don't worry though USB keyboards are fine as they don't really draw that much power. You can get any large fan that plugs into the wall and just have it for the purpose of air circulation and cooler room temperature, you don't really need to have it blowing directly onto the console itself.

Tests show temp increases when the unit is stood vertically. Ironically this is the same case with the Playstation 2.

I have a hurricane floor fan pointed directly at the PS3 air intake vents on the front which I use for the summer as it gets pretty hot and we have no AC in the room the PS3 is in. Helps keep the temps down (fan inside PS3 never kicks in to high except on really humid days) and it's worked fine for me for almost 2 years now.

I started doing this because my first PS3 died on me from YLOD. I used to leave it on overnights and stream movies/shows off of it on to my PSP and eventually it died, even though it was in an open area away from other electronics.

Wife actually bought that first Intec cooler you linked after I got my replacement PS3 when the first one died. It's shit, don't bother with it. One of the worst problems it has is the fan blades inside would rattle against the plastic casing and make a loud annoying sound.

Both my PS3's were 60gb launch units though, which are more prone to heat issues. If you have a slim, don't bother with cooling units, you don't need them. If you have a fat PS3, extra cooling won't hurt (if you do it right) and helps keep the mind at ease.

Think my problem was that this. My ps3 is alone on a shelf on my tv stand, however it was pushed back against the back part of the stand. The stand was warm itself, thank you for the replies <3

If its not blowing out air so hot that it eventually starts to burn or you feel a slight pain (135F+) then you don't have anything to worry about, that's generally how I tell when something is to the point where there is either; something horribly wrong with it, or its on fire.

both of which can apply at the same time.

That's how my roommate's was, eventually the HD fried. Not sure if it's related but yeah.

I have mine set up on a milk crate so there's no solid walls around it. Strongly recommended if you can find some cheap.
