    Best ultra-lightweight digital music player?

Basically I'm looking for something to replace my 2GB 2nd gen iPod Shuffle that met an unfortunate demise when I forgot to retrieve it from the interior of my last pair of gym shoes before throwing them down the trash compactor. I've been doing some looking around and found some promising options such as the (also discontinued) Sony 2GB Walkman MP3 player. Ideally this would be something I could clip onto my running shorts, I'm not too fond of wearing an armband. No need to necessarily have a display, but requiring a proprietary set of headphones with an inline remote that repeatedly pop out of my ears due to shitty design is not an option.

Probably an iPod or something. Latest gen, whatever the smallest they have (nano?) with third-party headphones.

Sansa Clip might be just what you're looking for.

Try a Sansa- pretty bare-bones, but does the job.

If you're serious about ultra-lightweight, probably one of the million mp3 players built right into a headset. Obviously light on features.. but no wires, nothing to clip, just a headset. S'the only way to run.

If you can find one of these I highly recommend it. It fits all of your requirements and is really durable(at least my cat thinks so).

Have you checked out the Sansa Clip+ yet? It's only about $40 and it's incredibly tiny. I got one for my brother last christmas to use while working out because, as the name implies, it just clips to your clothing and is pretty unnoticeable. Don't think it does a whole hell of a lot outside of the standard MP3 player functions.

I LOVE my Sansa Fuze 4gb (and can be expanded with MicroSD so I could make it 12gb for another ~$20 lol =O), and I got it for $20 and free shipping re-certified on Newegg (it also plays videos and all that stuff so really can't be beat at that price). The Sansa Clip is a bare-bones tiny little thing, and you can get it for <$20 on Newegg as well if you catch them selling re-certified ones (they do it almost every Newegg newsletter they send). Highly recommended though I do only have experience for a Fuze 4gb so can't be certain of a Clips quality, but I imagine it would be of the same quality. Worst case is you lost out $20 which isn't that bad.

Gonna open myself to flames, but I wouldn't bother with overpriced Apple stuff unless you just have extra money and nothing else to spend it on. I'll stick with my cheap little $20 Fuze personally. Not that I wouldn't like an Iproduct they just aren't worth the entry price.

    Apple products dont show Flash.
    Flash is used for porn.
    The internet is for porn.
Therefore Apple products aren't for the internet.

What's wrong with a new iPod shuffle? seems to fit what you need quite well.

They reduced the size to the extent that they no longer had room on the device itself to place controls, and the previous generation, with on-device controls, was discontinued. In lieu of that, they use proprietary headphones with an in-line remote that last I checked did not have a third party adapter available and if they are anything like normal iPod earbuds, would constantly fall out of my ears while running.

tl;dr they figured out they could do something and went to production with a stupid idea before deciding whether they even should have in the first place.

If you want to stick to Apple products, the latest in the Nano series is relatively small, albeit about 2.5x the size of your old shuffle, but you get a screen, video capture, and all that other crap as a bonus if for some reason you ever need it.

Yeah, all shit that I don't need and adds extra weight at a size that doesn't fit as well (if at all) on a waistband. The 2nd gen shuffle was perfect, and they had to go ruin it. I'll probably end up trying to hunt down a used 2nd gen shuffle or get a Sansa Clip+ once I get the money freed up.
