I'm always amazed by the fact that people play the lottery

Why? I have 5 dollars to waste, why not throw it at a chance for 50 mil? The biggest amazement is people who own 5 Ferrari's, and only drive 1. If you have that kinda money to waste, give it to me.

The thing I love about our lottery's is how the Federal tax doesn't rape your winnings. They may not be as big as some of the USA lotteries, but by golly, at least we get to keep most of it and win more frequently.

Indeed. Winning a big jackpot in the US must feel terrible when the feds go an ask for 55% of your winnings as soon as you get it.

Besides lotto revenue goes to pay for things like arts funding, schools, community development, and other human services projects. It's certainly not the best use of my money (quite possibly the worst) but at $2.50/week or two, I'm still paying my rent just fine.

This story seems to change...
here I heard someone bought a ticket on a hunch, then said "you know what, cancel it, I dont gamble, this is a mistake", ticket got refunded....but the number still exists in the computer, and the numbers were the winning numbers. Both in Eastern Canada though, Newfoundland iirc.

The rumor around here is that the girl rang in the incorrect amount that the guy asked for, and he cancelled it, and that cancelled ticket had the 30 mil on it.

Reasonably sure NOTHING interesting like that has ever happened back home. I don't pay attention to the news much, but my family likes to relay stories to me from Newfoundland all the time... I'd have heard about it in a non-rumor kind of way.

$50 million Lotto Max jackpot goes unclaimed for 3rd week

TORONTO — No one has the winning ticket for the $50 million jackpot prize in Friday night's Lotto Max draw.

That means the jackpot will be the same for the next draw June 25th.

In addition, next Friday's draw will include an estimated 55 Maxmillion draws for $1 million each.

It's the third week in a row no one has won the jackpot prize.

There were 30 winning tickets for the 45 Maxmillion prizes of $1 million each that were up for grabs in Friday night's draw.

Among the provinces, Ontario had the biggest number of Maxmillion winners — 16, while Quebec had 11.

The odds that anyone had the winning ticket for the jackpot are one in 28 million.

The odds are better, one in 623-thousand, that anyone had the winning ticket for any of the $1 million consolation prizes.

Dunno on canadian end, but yes the the winnings are taxed in the US, though the jackpots are high enough that even after tax, it still breaks 50.
