I bought my fiance this watch:

I myself enjoy Fossil leather straps with the moving seconds. Closest I could find, though the watch frame is round...not square.

gosh this was hard to find a picture of, but I worked out it's probably close to 10 years old at least, and still going strong.

Theres a difference between Mass market, fashion, and high end chronometer watches.

Lower end pieces can ironically be easier to use and more accurate, but obviously lack the style and character of the upper end watches.

Mid range you have fashion watches, from Armani and D&G that are basically just branded low end pieces, to TAG heuer which are are one of the most well known watch brands. TAGs are nice watches but they fit into the fashion category, as they are mostly made with assemblies of outsourced components, very few of them are Chronometer certified.

If you want a watch for life and have a reasonable budget, i strongly recommend Omega, their reputation is staggering, some models are automatic. Alternatively there is Rolex, Breitling, Hublot, etc. Anything in this category should be chronometer certified, these are 'real' watches.

Past that there are bespoke watches from small manufacturers that have no real price limit, there are some stunning pieces out there, but few will ever afford them.

Oh gawd, I don't know what it is but there's something about a nice chunky silver steel watch on a tanned man's arm that makes me go more than slightly fluttery and unecessarily girlie inside :D

http://www.beaverbrooks.co.uk/i/prod...0412656981.jpg is my current one - tend to just request a one as a birthday present every couple of years when my old one dies and leave it to my husband to pick one as he's really really good at picking out jewellery I'd suit. This one isn't my fave but my old one that I adored lost the glass pane on it last year and I haven't got round to getting that repaired as it was gorgeous. I can't wear ones with leather straps that fit tightly around the wrist because I get allergic to the metal parts of them really quickly - hence always have to go for bracelet type ones - also don't suit anything gold coloured with my skin tone (even my wedding ring's white gold not yellow gold).

I feel lost if I don't have a watch on since I constantly have to have one eye on the clock at work to pace lessons out, and can't really be dragging my mobile out to use the clock on that (it's not worth the 10 minutes of "let's critique the teacher's mobile" that ensues if the kids see it).

My friend's watch tells him a great deal of information.. time, temperature, air pressure, sea level, etc. Him and his quirky wants.

I'd wear my great grandfathers handwound pocketwatch if I wasn't afraid of losing it, damn things like 80 years old.

    Edit: from 1915

Has 1 and 2 cent stamps on the box it was delivered in, not cracked though.

As for "why do you need a watch when you have a cellphone" -- it's partially psychological. I've worn a watch since I was 6 or 7, and I feel really odd without it.

For a short while I was trying to find a watch that could do 5 million things and not look like ass, but then I realized most of the things I'd want the watch to do I can do with my smartphone much easier, so now I'm just looking for a nice looking watch, lol.
