Japanese whiskey is so-so. Suntory makes most of what gets served in bars over there and it's a little bland. I guess 'the way' to drink it is hot, it's very much a winter beverage over there.

Oh I made a mistake Stranahan's isn't a bourbon it is a whiskey, but it's pretty damn good whiskey as far as American made goes.

Crown Royal & Wisers Deluxe are my usual whiskys. Both great with coke and/or lime. Wisers better with just a lil lime & Crown a lil better neat or on the rocks.

Also love Glenfiddich, Elijah Craig, Glenlivet, & Gibsons rare and the best rum I drink is Pyrat (neat only).

And honestly @ OP if you don't like beer you're probably not ever actually trying beer, just the pisswater you find in local dives. I mean just from your troubles in getting a good whiskey I can tell you're going to absolute shitholes or live in a po' dunk town.

Go to a better bar and ask the bartender about what they have on tap that's a craft beer and explain the flavors. I used to think beer was shit when all I drank was Bud Light and whiskey was shit when all I drank was Jack. Then I grew up and found solid places with solid selections.

Shit man, walk into any decent liquor store and check out the beer selection. New Belgium is getting pretty big and they do a case of 3 bottles of 5 different crafts ranging from wheat beer to an IPA. It's really worth it to start with something like that so you can understand what flavor of beer you like because there's really shit for everyone out there if you know what you're doing.


In the end it's gonna be the same thing with whiskey. Find a decent bar and try running the gamut of their selection. Not in one night of course because you'll need to take your time with each drink to understand the complexities of each one.

Can't go wrong with Canadian Club as others have said. Wiser's is also good, but I'm not sure you would be able to get either of those in Ohio.

Jameson is my choice whiskey, especially if I'm drinking it straight, but I'll drink Jack Daniels or Seagram's 7. I'm poor and uneducated in fine booze.

If you have one of those big liquor supermarkets near you hit those up. Mine usually has Johnny Walker Green and Gold marked down considerably. Like $35 for Green or $45 for Gold.

If you've got some extra cash and want to experience what's up that's a good place to start. And they usually have reward programs so that the more often you spend there you get free cash towards shit.

Fuck man the other day I went to the register with Perrier & Joet, JWG, and a Dogfish Head 90 Minute IPA and it was pretty much free after I redeemed some points I had earned.

I'm a fan of Glenfiddich whiskies, usually drink Scotch over anything else. Drink Glenfiddich and Glenmorangie most of all as there's usally a nice selection of those in the stores here ;(

Had a really beautiful whisky over xmas - Penderyn Oloroso edition. It's a Welsh whisky, from the blurb in the presentation box it claimed to be the only distillery in Wales, and it was beautiful, especially for such a young bottle. Aged in sherrywood, and very smooth and quite sweet as they go. Maybe it was the novelty of a Welsh whisky, but I really loved it.

Voted for Canadian because if I'm buying a bottle for myself it is typically Crown. At a bar I'm normally a beer guy, so if I am drinking liquor it is usually whatever is on special (typically Jack if its a whiskey). Don't have a lot of coin to spare on booze, but I might have to splurge and pick up a bottle of one of the brands you guys recommend.

I've seen the Three Wise Men shot end so many people's nights (badly), that I've lost count. Triple shot of Jim Beam, Jack Daniels, & Johnnie Walker. Add Wild Turkey to make it a Three Wise Men Go Hunting (not recommended).

p.s. If you don't like beer you haven't tried enough beers.

p.s.s. To the guy who liked Bass, try a Black and Tan (Guinness + Bass). Most places around here with a decent variety on tap will use Bass as the Tan. Your results might vary.

Glenfiddich, Glenlivet and Jameson.

Glenfiddich got me started on whiskey, before that I hated it, but only because every bar had the same shitty bottles. J&B, Johnny Walker red, only in the bar to make whiskey cola's.
Jameson has been a favourite of mine, since it's easier to find in bars and cheaper than the other two, but still great.

Have to say that I'm mostly a beer fag though!

This, just fucking this. Jack is great regardless but the single barrel is top notch. Gentlemen's is also delicious. One of the few drinks I can drink straight from the bottle and not be disgusted
