interestingly enough while a number of religions have prohibitions against homosexuality or gay sex, it's usually in reference to 2 men. Most religions have no such prohibitions regarding lesbianism, mostly because intense studies by religious scholars have found girl-on-girl sex to be extremely hot.

This is actually a more modern view on it. Just 1800 years ago 2 men was completely acceptable and in some cases encouraged, while 2 women was explicitly forbidden as women don't have a sexual desire, are clean and innocent, andhave the sole purpose of pleasing men. As such, lesbian sex was a blasphemy. Despite this, there's several poems and letters found from this era between women and about lesbianism.

Hell, the Mayan and Aztec temples had male prostitutes which the more important people were free to use as desired. And in earlier cultures homosexuals, eunuches, transvestites etc. had a high religious importance, and were often the religious leader, as they were considered possessing both the male and the female, and as such had the perfect balance and were considered as having the best contact and insight in to the spirit world/spirits/ancestors/whatever.

Or perhaps religious leaders often become homosexual in order to achieve a greater balance (I'm looking at you catholic priests).

What I don't get is how you choose which passages are metaphor and which are the immutable word of God in an objective way.

You get that "right" the minute you decide that you personally don't like something, so you'll rally behind its prohibition by use of an ancient book.

If people truly wished to ban homosexuality under the tenants of their faith, then they'd have to ban so many other things that they'd inevitably fail and would be subject to the same hatred and public condemnation.
