    Graphics card SPLODES > shutdown

Sooooooooooooooooo I was playing Aion and I afk'd for like 3minutes. I came back and my entire screen was 1 huge pink artifact. Before I made it to my computer aion closed and my display looked as if it had no drivers installed. I got an error immediately saying something had sploded and I needed to reboot the comp.

Upon rebooting the screen had pink artifacts everywhere on the loadup screen (no beeps when boot) once it got to the windows xp screen it froze pink screen'd and turned off.

I took sometime to clean out all the grime and gunk inside my card and loaded it back up. Worked fine. Loaded aion, EXPLODED. Been playing aion for about 7months now.

Address a problem with your video device driver

You received this message because a hardware device in your computer caused Windows to shut down unexpectedly and restart. This is a serious problem, commonly referred to as a "stop error" or "blue screen."
got that message after successful reboot

Your video card overheated and fried, you need to buy a new one.

Try reinstalling the drivers for your video card. If that doesn't work, it's likely borked and time for a replacement.

So I've never had something fry on me. I'm currently using it right now. No problems. Is this usually how it is? I tried loading Diablo II, Starcraft, Stepmania, Counterstrike so far no problems at all. I'm worried about loading Aion, SCII or WoW though :X I'll try to reinstall drivers.

Use something like rivatuner or EVGA precision to monitor your temperatures and fan speeds too, it's possible it's overheating when you play games that are more graphically demanding.

Your graphics card is most likely dead. If its under warranty, RMA it. If not, you can try this:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9gb1ujGfp0M
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RVWDru1bub8

Not a joke, actually works sometimes. Legit. I've bought dead cards off eBay for dollars and fixed them this way, sold a few for profit and built something for my brother. If you're at the end of your rope where you're going to buy something else anyway, give it a shot before you give up.

You replied while I was typing that out, so don't throw it in the oven yet lol. If you're running on it right now and it doesn't artifact until it gets under load, download something to monitor your temperatures and run a benchmark/OC scanner and see what temperature it crashes at.

Way too expensive for a GTS250, I wouldn't buy one unless it was less than $115. Good card, just overpriced.

I'm not sure I'd trust running through the molex converter thing, even if they supply them in the box. Truthfully I'd say you are limited to a HD5670 or a GT240 but if you seriously want to risk it then try HD5750, they are pretty easy on power as far as 6pin GPUs go. Also I know they make 6pin-less 9800GTs but I'm not sure if they are all the terrible "green" versions (seriously, they are shit) or not. *Edit: Thought about it... they'd probably perform around the same as the GT240 so shouldn't matter as long as you don't pay too much more than the GT240.

It looks like it comes with a converter cable so you should be ok.. Before we go on though - do you have the rating on your power supply? I'm asking because it seems like you have an older machine from before 6-pin gpu power connectors became a must have.

The GTS250 (aka 9800GTX+) is only a small step up from where you were with the 8600GT. I'd recommend looking at the GeForce GTX260 or GTX275, or Radeon 4870 or 5770. Those four would give you good performance and not cost too much ($150-200).

GTS250 is to 8600GT as 8600GT is to integrated. I think it's about the equivalent of a 7800GT and the 8800GT was almost twice as fast as the 7800GT.

If you seriously didn't get what I said the first time, it's an analogy without a shallow comparison. Would you rather I used cars (aka a shallow comparison)? Could always edit it in.

No 6 pin connector. Go with the 5670, at least you'll have DirectX 11 and from what I can see 5670 = 9800GT, if you can find a 4890 for $160 I would highly recommend it

I never compared a 8600GT to a GTS250, much less any 7-series card.. I equated a 9800GTX+ to a GTS250, because they are exactly the same. Nvidia has even stated publicly that they have re-packaged the old cards. For a more thorough comparison you might want to take a look here. It'll give you an idea about how widespread the G9x cores are used even in some newer cards.

That looks a lot like a comparison to me...

There was never any debate on whether or not the GTS250 was a rebadged 9800GTX+. Matter of fact I own one, quite aware of its specifications and capabilities.

Neat chart, though I have to wonder about the fact that it kind of conflicts with THG's tests of those top end cards; the 5970 pulls miles ahead of the GTX 480.

I wonder if those people with the 5970s skimped on their CPU so they could afford the heavier GPU...might explain it, since the card is actually CPU limited more than anything.
