The first FMA has a better dub voice selection so far imo, I personally find the Brotherhood dub cast terrible in several roles.

Storywise the manga is obviously better but I didn't really hate the first one. Alot of stuff like Mustang vs Pride I liked just because it seems like a fight that should have happened, especially with all the extra shit he puts Mustang through in the manga. The ending though was pretty horrid, and the movie didn't help matters at all except by letting us know what happened to the remaining Homunculus and leaving the series ended on another cliffhanger.

Manga and Brotherhood > the original.

Original was okay, and in some ways, better....in the beginning when it was still following the actual storyline, but I just like the actual story so much better than the way the original ended. Oh, and I hated Wrath in the original, so annoying.

edit: I'm not even really going to count the dubbing, since I don't watch anime dubbed.

I'd definitely say if you're going to watch both, the dub is safe for the original series, but go with subtitles for Brotherhood because some of the very coolest characters got horrible matches for English voice-actors. English Greed from the original as well as characters like Bradley are too good to skip, but they're Japanese counter-parts in Brotherhood are also really amazing.

Anyhow, I think it's already been said over and over just from skimming, but they're really apples and oranges and both are great in their own ways. Personally I love the Brotherhood series much more, but I credit the original series for giving those initial attachments to a lot of the characters. The first has a much smaller cast with a big focus on interpersonal relationships, but the 2nd fleshes things out much more and has a much greater feeling that your protagonists are really affecting the entire world's future. It's not even over yet, either!

Watch FMA:B and then when you catch up watch the original's Greed fight. Greed fight was/is fucking awesome.

So far having only seen the episodes aired on adult swim for brotherhood, I like the first series better right now. Chalk it up to not having seen all the episodes so far I guess.

Yeah, I definitely enjoyed the original FMA more than this new one.

I mean both are excellent tv, but when comparing the two..

I just felt like the mood in the original was different, better. Sure FMA:B has it's share of episodes that I liked (like the one that explains the daddy's past) but I always feel like something is missing. Especially the earlier episodes where they're trying to be funny but fail at it kinda killed the mood for me.

I pretty much agree with most the people here. The first one is worth watching, no doubt, but brotherhood is so much better. It might be because it's longer, but the character development is better in brotherhood too.

Original FMA was awesome enough for me to care for 50 eps (generally, I try to limit the episode count out of sheer sanity).

It spliced too much with filler (though most animes of longer runs are guilty of this). I like the pacing of Brotherhood much better as well as the background of a lot of characters (Father is a more interesting bad guy than Dante). The Homunculi are generally more interesting in this version as well. Hohenheim is also way more interesting and badass in :B while not really being majorly significant in the first version.

But regardless, FMA is good. Brotherhood is just better.

The original anime was good, you probably never gave it a fair chance if you hated it (especially if enjoy anime). Thew new one follow the manga completely and is better.

ep1-20 = similar to the manga, ep21-52= alternate ending.

FMA brotherhood
ep1-10 = retelling of the important event that were already covered in the first 20 episodes of the first series, ep11-60 = direct adaption of the manga story

Honestly the ending of the anime and movie just left me depressed and disappointed it was just sort of bleh...

FMA Brotherhood has 3 episodes left, and the manga's final chapter comes out this weekend.

Rewatching FMA to watch FMA Brotherhood won't do anything for you, they're essentially two completely different series except in name. Although the first 12~ episodes of Brotherhood feel a bit rushed. The story at the beginning was the same as the first anime, so they rushed through it a bit to get to the new content.

Manga is supposed to end this month, last issue is rumored to be 150 pages and comes out June 12th. There's no reason to watch the first FMA anime before Brotherhood. Brotherhood has the entire story, though the first parts are a little fast-forwarded. Like someone said the first was more or less a fanfic after the show gets around the Tucker and Greed parts.

The story make a lot more sense this time around. You probably won't be disapointed, but who knows.

Brotherhood its quite better but I liked the first FMA, there are some things that I liked how they were in the first series

* Having Elric Brothers Mother human transmutation staying that way
* Alchemist Daughter/Dog chimera episode

Both were sooooooo disturbing that made the dark side of the show so strong, first point is watered down in the realy manga/brotherhood story and the Daughter/Dog Chimera episode was a lor more disturbing also in the first series.

So if anyone has not watched either series I would watch first FMA first 20 episodes at least (but seeing all of them its nice also) then Brotherhood, not only because you get extra story/characters that flow into Brotherhood but you also get two bits that are better portrayed than in Brotherhood IMO.

This is probably the best suggestion. Watch FMA: Vanilla up to around episode 20(?) then switch over to FMA: Brotherhood around 12~13ish.
