When the original FMA came out, the manga was somewhere around I want to say Chapter 20 or so, I can't remember off the top of my head. Bones Studio went off to make an adaptation of the Manga and Hiromu Arakawa asked them to come up with their own ending because she did not want people to read and watch the same ending twice. Because it was very early in the manga and readers did not know about the origins of the Homunculi, Bones Studio had to make up their own origins as to how they came to be. Arakawa did help with the original anime a bit but she wasn't as heavily involved as one would think. Because of this, you see a lot of similarities and differences in the original anime and the manga.

    Spoiler: show

In the original anime, Homonculi were created by a failed human transmutation and each of them were represented by failed attempts.

Lust came from a failed attempt by Scars brother to bring his wife back to life.
Envy was the failed attempt by Hohenheim to bring back to life a child he had with Dante
Wrath is the failed attempt to bring Izzumi's baby back to life
Sloth is Al and Eds mother
Gluttony is a "factory" that makes imperfect philosopher stones by condensing the souls of people he ate

Also, in the original Anime, the only way to kill a Homunculus is to get them near or to touch an artifact of their original bodies which weakens them enough to kill them. In the manga, you have to kill them repeatedly to exhaust their philosophers stone.

So there are a lot of creative differences that make the original anime and the manga feel like the same story but yet different. I suggest watching the original and then the new one because they are both great stories.

not that it matter much, but actually in the original, by using the part of the former homunculus body as a catalyst, one can create a circle that causes them to expel all of their remaining philosopher stone.

The part itself only stun/paralyze them from doing anything else.

FMA first series was decent in establishing the role and personality of Ed and Al, but does little justice to the rest of the character, especially compared to the manga/brotherhood.

It's decent, but the last few episode was just a kick in the nuts for me, with the whole world war 2 parallel shit, and just how the series ended. It's depressing and the whole Dante and Honenheim shit had very little background explanation, making Dante seem to just came out of nowhere, not to mention her motive is hardly hold a candle to Father's

The movie was just bleh, it took the one part I hated the most out of the first series, and actually developed on it, and added about 3 more parts of emo into the series. If you like it, you're probably a Nazi, just like everyone else in that movie.
