I hope that they lead to being an Ex version to be honest, because there are going to be certain builds that you could use over others for separate situations, there for you could maximize your total experience with these weapons.

Like if one path allows you to have an Occ. 2 - 3 but another path allows you to rock a 100+ DMG weapon, needless be explained on that.

I'm kind of sickened by the fact that they haven't given us a proper world expansion, with many new zones, since fucking ToAU. With Abyssea about to be nothing but reskins, I'm not entirely sure why you'd keep playing.

While it is indeed a dissapointment, maybe they are being smart about it. WoTG is still 2 updates away(including upcoming one) from finishing, it has been dragged out longer than expansions usually last but with all these mini-expansions being thrown in alongside it.
If FFXIV is still on schedule for fall 2010 release then the final Abyssea expansion will be released in what is currently thought to be the month FFXIV will be released in. It would make sense for them to wait and see how much XI is affected by XIV release before deciding if a new full scale expansion pack is worth doing.
Long story short, if FFXI keeps a good enough playerbase after all the current planned content for the year/XIV release, i'm sure we will be seeing another full expansion. If it doesn't then mini-expansions are likely the only future XI will be seeing. That's just my take on it though!

Few reasons. They discontinued making the PS2 versions or the game, so if they ever released a new disc expansion, they would not be able to provide for PS2 users. The add-ons are the easiest way to provide for all users, without having to use disc. So they can't do a full-fledged expansion pack like TOA or WOTG, either because it will be hell to download a full continent (Including new NPCs, mobs, zones, towns, weapons, armors, missions, quest, ect) on update day, or because they wouldn't able to provide for everyone.

Everyone here knows that the prime of FFXI was during TOA. That timed has passed, and they are at least offering some new content to keep old players here and get old ones to come back, not gain new ones. (Well they are, but aren't trying hard)

Hell, I even remember hearing that the entire graphic animation of FFXI now consist of two people.

"Real" Expansions never get announced till near the end of previous ones as they work on them together, Add-ons are the new thing really with a smaller player base.

CoP wasn't announced till just around the middle/endish of Zilart.

ToAu wasn't announced till they unlocked chapter 7+

WoTG wasn't announced till they got half way through all of the ToAU missions iirc.

Most MMOs don't even have expansion packs and many that do are of these Add-on quality with more gear added, they VERY rarely even add areas. It was surprising that SE didn't do the add-on route from the start of FFXI because most MMOs back then were doing it.

Since these mandies are bipedal I'm expecting AoE Sleep with TP reset.

people need to drop the old-fashioned mindset that an expansion necessarily has to have world expansion, new zones and all that jazz.

Every game will have its tipping point, and FFXI is well over that limit in terms of having zones that are being well utilized.

If you really think its a necessity, then perhaps you're one of those people who also happen to like deserted zones throughout the game.

Content can be catered to it but its better to not over-expand the world if its possible to.. and this isn't even considering server load conservation yet.

Game is old, doesn't generate as much revenue (especially with you-know-what on the horizon) and this is why we're not going to see anything substantial expansion wise anymore.

People who still play should really start to try to just deal with it right about now, or quit. It's not going to get better, if the playerbase doesn't suddenly start growing in size again... which is unlikely. This is logical approach for SE to take, as much as we don't want to accept it.

And those who don't play anymore make me wonder why they're still here, posting.. oh fuck it, I'm one of those people. This update is more interesting than the rest though.

Content planned out for this year is looking more exciting than last year for sure, with focus switching completely to end-game content to keep existing players happy instead of trying to gain new ones. Last year had no kind of fanfest either, and updates became every 4 months rather than the 3 month gaps it used to be/has gone back to being.

Which is interesting, one would think they'd use most of their resources to iron out XIV, beta is pretty important time for any game after all.

I guess they just don't wanna give the impression that they're completely abandoning XI and that increasing funds for that cause would be worth it.

EDIT: Holy shit, just now got to see the weapons and Gaxe has a finnish name :Q_

As shitty as it may be, we may never see a new true expansion ever again for FFXI, their biggest fault was going out and giving support to PS2, altho at the start it may have given the MMO the biggest push and the most life, but in the end it is what will end up killing the MMORPG

Unless they announce an official new Hard drive you can order from them that would have 120GB+ so they can stop crying about running out of space, you may want to deal with it, quiet a few of the JP players, play from a hub source on PS2, sorta like a LAN center, if those even still exist.

At least with FF14 they don't have to worry about hard drive space, because if it gets to low then the user can just swap out hard drives, I believe PS3 now supports a 500gb HDD, used to be 320GB

But I'm almost certain with the up coming release of 14, their efforts of going to keep 11 around, regardless of the population is going to diminish quickly, which saddens me.

Looking forward to doing new content, but I agree with Kuno that the trailer hasn't done anything to pique my interest further. Three players smacking reskinned monsters in slightly redder versions of some of the oldest and least exciting zones in the game doesn't get my juices flowing. I don't know what the big deal is about the music is either... aside from the fact that it's new it's pretty unremarkable.
