The waterfalls were another event that was just too implausible for me. I understand an Indy film isn't about 100% realism.. But when you have scenes that are so out there, that in the aftermath you're left wondering how they could possibly expect you to believe it... I think you've lost some of the appeal.

"Bend not break" would be a good motto for your most outrageous scenes.. And they shattered stuff in the last movie.

I liked Crystal Skull, but I have high expectations for the franchise -hopefully they'll deliver something better..

If by "carry" they mean "crushed to death under the trademark rolling boulder trap", I'm all for it.

Other than the ridiculous monkey part, and the refrigerator, I liked Crystal Skull -- but Raiders/Last Crusade are by far my favorite of the series.

I can't understand a lot of the criticism that Skull received. I had a bunch of friends who disliked it because they thought the climax was too unbelievable and didn't belong in an Indiana Jones movie. But honestly, the first dealt with the Arc of the Covenant, the second with mysticism, and the third with the Holy Grail. I didn't find Skull's plot any more far fetched than the rest. Besides, the movies were intended to be spoofs of cheesy 50's detective "B" movies, so OFC the tone is going to be mostly light.

Edit: Damn it all I've been waiting since as a child for them to make that click-and-play adventure game of Indiana Jones and the Lost City of Atlantis into a movie, it would've been fantastic imho as I loved that game XD The Last Crusade for DOS, in the same manner, had some issues where if you f'ed up something you would be screwed for the rest of the game but was still fun nonetheless.

Super natural and mystical things are not the same as aliens. "God is real, and the shit Indy finds is from God" is a far cry from "Oh, and there are aliens too."

I fail to see the difference between "Aliens are real" and "God is real". Hell, aliens are probably more plausible, though not in the way they were seen in the movie.

Fact of the matter is, Indy movies always have you suspend your disbelief. And if it becomes a little unrealistic, who cares? It's a movie. If it had enjoyable action, comedy, etc then it did its job just fine. You have a movie series where people get melted through the sheer force of the Ark and you're gonna bitch about there being aliens? Some people nitpick way too much.

I think the issue with that is not degree of disbelief as it is type. 3 movies dealing with essentially supernatural things, 2 heavily based on christian lore, versus aliens.
if season 6 of Supernatural is about an alien invasion, I'd be pissed as hell.

It's important to remember that the theme of the Indy movies wasn't specifically the supernatural--it was archaeology. Whatever mystery he was facing, it had roots in the past.

But, I thought it was simply a matter of progression.

Time was moving on, they were in the Cold War era, paranormal combat was a popular topic of research in U.S. and Soviet circles, and alien encounters were an urban myth that was slowly becoming a part of popular culture.

Or course, Indy being an archaeologist and a man of science in general, there had to be some tie to earth's ancient history, and so enter the Mayan myth of the Crystal Skulls and their uncanny properties.

Keep in mind that there was always an element of scientific research in Indy's adventures, even searching for artifacts of god, it was brought down to technical levels.

So taking an element of science fiction wasn't a far cry in my mind, but it was putting it under the banner of exploration and history that made it a recognizable Indy film. I really thought it was only a matter of time before some story touched on it.



Of course, as I previously said, the extraterrestrial spin wasn't hardly my beef with the film. >.>

Edit: And everything that Fatqalbert said, judeochristian, hindu, chinese mythology, and mayan mythology are all cool, just not fucking aliens with my Indy.
