This. By far the best RPG this gen, will keep you busy for ages. DMC4, Bayonetta and Ninja Gaiden 2 (Sigma for PS3) if you like hack n slash, RDR, Mass Effect 1 and 2. Prince of Persia is fun, lots of people hate on it 'cause you "can't die", but I don't see that as a problem in the slightest.
Star Ocean 4 on ps3 is pretty decent too if you like straight forward game with no twist, like Dragon Quest 8.
Oh god. When you heard the "KAAHHH" I couldn't go without some type of automatic gun cause of how creepy and paranoid it started getting. I'm pretty sure I was playing at 3am one day and I hated it rofl.
Back to the OP you could give The Last Remnant a shot. It's a bit more challenging than most FF games but you do get a similar vibe when playing.
If you liked Oblivion, you'll likely enjoy Fallout 3 as its made by the same people, and is very similar...well, except with guns, mutants, and zombies instead of swords, elves, and demons.
Mass Effect 1 & 2 are must plays. ME2 is GOTY, but you really need to play ME1 first. Its a great game, not as good as ME2, but still a great game.
Dragon Age: Origins is really neat too.
On the non RPG side of things, I really enjoyed Batman: Arkham Asylum.
I gave Lost Odyssey, and Infinite Undiscovery a try last year, but I couldn't get into them. You may like them though, they have a heavy JRPG feel.
Sounds like Dragon Age and ME1 are candidates for stuff I would like. I also just saw TR2 was on PS Store, and might try that too.
You might like Heavy Rain. I didn't care too much for it myself, but I'm more of a FPS kinda guy. But yeah, Fallout was sweet
Your tastes seem quite similar to mine.
This generally is my opinion. I personally thought ME1 was the better of the two, but they're both modern rpg excellence.
If you have a DS/GBA and are into handheld JRPG's, Golden Sun 1/2 might be worth looking into since the series might be seeing some new action at E3.
Resonance of Fate, best JRPG this side of FF13, probably the most rewarding battle system ever.
Also, explore other genre's. For example, racing games have exploded this spring with 3 solid titles; Split/Second, Blur, and Modnation Racers. The later has the most detailed custom track making tool you could ever ask for. You will literally lose hours making your own race tracks.
honorable mentions; Red Dead Redemption, SSF4, Bayonetta, and Nier believe it or not. I'm 5 hours in and its actually really good.
Suikoden is also i great title to get from the playtation store. i thinks its 4.99. or 5.99. Can't go wrong there. 108 playable characters in an RPG.
