A new Mortal Kombat is on the way. And Fatalities are back.

Warner Brothers Interactive Entertainment just announced that the famous fighting franchise will return on the Xbox and PlayStation 3 in 2011 in a new MK that will be in 2D.

The company says that the game will also include extensive online play, a "tag-team" game option that supports up to four players in two-person teams and "the deepest story mode of any fighting game." The game will also support classic 1 vs. 1 combat. The graphics engine is said to be brand-new.

MK creator Ed Boon is overseeing the project, which is in development at NetherRealm Studios. "This game really is a response to what players have been demanding," Boon said in a press release, "mature presentation, reinvented 2D fighting mechanic and the best, most gruesome fatalities ever!"

Horrible? You clearly didn't see MK:A. This looks fantastic compared to other game based movies.

You do realize the original creator of the entire franchise is spearheading the whole dev process right?

They said he was "overseeing" the project, which could mean a lot of different things. And he was only 1 of the original creators, so who knows what will happen.

I liked the live-action trailer. Spawn was a bit heavy but the entire thing had a campy Twisted Metal Black feel to it anyway.

New game-play trailer looks cool. Reminds you of the original games before things got gayed.

Looks like they're going back to the MK3/UMK3 dial-a-combo style game-play. Not a bad thing to be honest, just keep Ermac out of it.

2 things I noticed in that. The chick appears to be wearing less clothes than Ivy did in SC4. And the final fatality looked brutal.

That trailer actually looks pretty good to me. Looking forward to it. MKII WAS my childhood of gaming. Brought my step brother and I very close.
