i'll be brewing this weekend actually :D. it's basically an english old ale... i wrote the recipe for my friend to make as a "high gravity christmas gift beer" and we both loved how it came out. rebrewing it now with recipe tweaks he made while in taiwan with his wife (random details), then letting it sit until 2011 holidays come around. the first batch got better and better with age. it tastes kind of like a mix between a belgian strong dark ale (added special b to give it that kind of twist, and i think wyeast 1728 scottish ale yeast + lowish fermentation temperatures brought out the fruitier stuff) and a porter (chocolate malt helped:D), and pretty full bodied. the new version is trying to be sweeter.

i'm working on a recipe for a full on belgian strong dark ale, with brettanomyces (probably added at bottling). it will probably be terrible, but i need to chase my interests(:. i think my friend is going to make a coconut porter soon which will probably be better than anything else we made.

re: beer drinking, had some ithaca cascazilla tonight. can't get enough of that beer.

I've been brewing for almost two years and loving it. Today I'm brewing my Kölsch once again; hopefully it will be done in time to submit to National Homebrew Competition. My last batch I made had an inexplicable haze that I could not get rid of. I used irish moss in the kettle and hit it with gelatin finings twice and the piece of shit will not clear. Hopefully today's batch turns out perfect and is ready. Also grabbed grains to make a hoppy rye beer next week.

Pretty good. I like Squall IPA more. This one is sharper, more like the 90 minute. Still good.

I'd give it an average rating. It was good but I don't think I'd go out of my way to get it again.

Also picked up DFH Sah'tea and Bitches' Brew to have over the next few days with the girlfriend.

wat, Ruination is way hoppier than 90min unless its a really old bottle or something. squall is easier to drink from what i remember, ruination is definitely for hop-heads.

I was not a fan of Sah'tea at all, maybe you'll like it though.

It very well could have been an older bottle that made it different. Especially since it's bottle conditioned. I didn't think it was all that bitter. It was certainly sharper than squall but I thought it would have been much more.

Dead guy was good, but it didn't really stand out for me. Average is probably not he best word to describe it to tell the truth. I don't know.

I got the sah'tea becase the girlfriend was interested in it. She wanted that or Fort and Fort was $17 a bottle at the distributor near me and I didn't think that was reasonable for the two of us to have 3/4 of a pint.

Ruination is one of my favorite ales, but I'm really a huge fag for anything Stone brews.

Earlier this week, my friend and I finally finished off the last of a case of Double Bastard I'd bought back in November. Feels bittersweet man.

I love the abyss. I had this years batch and it was ridiculously good. Unlike any other beer I have had, although I haven't had many beers brewed with molasses.

Had some Delirium Tremens a few nights ago (on draft! And in a real Delirium tulip!) here in Boston; shit is dangerous, I had 3 glasses and didn't even realize it until my head was swimming on the walk back to my hotel lol.

Damn good though, I like the nocturne a little better by itself but the tremens is massively drinkable with dinner.

the problem with hitachino nest is that it's sooooo expensive for what it is ;__;. i'm guessing people can't find a way to sell it cheaper, but it's always several dollars more expensive than comparable beers in the same styles.

nor, i didn't realize you're in boston. bar recommendations: deep ellum, lord hobo, american craft, to a lesser extent sunset. also, cambridge brewing company > almost everything, their beers are excellent and the food is great too (though a bit pricey). 2 of my best friends live in allston, so i can occasionally be found bumming cigarettes off people and drunkenly conversing with the doorman at deep ellum.

edit: if not clear, boston is pretty much the best beer city outside of the west coast and maybe a couple places in colorado (and apparently michigan, but i don't really buy it given certain distribution things...). it kicks the shit out of NYC in this (probably only) respect as well.

I am in touch with Toshiyuki to organize how best the proceeds of many fund raising events can be transferred directly to him /to the families in need without loss to bureaucracies and/or administration.

1. They are all ok . Kiuchi brewery, in particular the Sake part, was damaged & need fixing/rebuilding. He will keep you posted.

2. The most damage was caused to Sendai, about 180 miles northeast of Mito. Lots of damage, but more importantly, lots of people missing.

3. Kiuchi brewery is now using their full brewery capacity to bottle water for people who have lost their homes. As you might have read on the internet there is a severe shortage on food & water there. We are extremely proud of Kiuchi Brewery's commitment
and fast action to help everyone in need.

4. We are putting together a shipment of special kegs & cases [at our cost] to be shipped to Kiuchi Brewery as soon as possible/appropriate. We want to organize a special event at Kiuchi brewery to raise money for all these many people who have lost their homes and loved ones.

Very good. It's really dark, but not heavy. It's got a good bitterness to it. And it's named appropriately.
Got Chatoe Rouge GYO Creek Ale to try as well. That'll be another night.

For any Quebecers or anyone from Ontario:
DDC's spring beer is being sold now. My local started selling it early. It's a maple Scotch ale. Very drinkable, very delicious. If you see it, give it a try because it will probably only be around for another month or so.
