    New Gaming Desktop

Building a new gaming laptop/school work laptop got around 2.1-2.2k to spend. What you think about this: also is there something that would top this easily for cheaper? The LEDS draw me to the laptop.

    Go with a desktop imo.

It'll be cheaper, better, and you can upgrade it in the long run. I regret getting a laptop for school I should have gotten a good desktop.

Not gonna start another argument about gaming laptops vs gaming desktops, its all user preference. If he wants a portable gaming PC, laptops > desktop......... if he didn't want it portable, he wouldn't be seeking advice on a laptop.

With that, Spec wise it looks like a good build........ however, since dell has bought out alienware it has never been the same quality wise. It has pretty much gone to shit (not to mention with the custom built i7s, having to wait 1+ months for it to arrive).

I would personally look into the Asus series of gaming laptops, I think the G73 would probobably be your best bet. Not to mention saving alot of money, as they are around $1,200 at bestbuy.

He can go with the higher end G73's online and stuff, also, if you read forums you can change out the processor and such and get even more out of it.

It's probably the best thing you can get right now.

You totally have it flipped, should get a nice laptop for school, and a PC for gaming. Just IMO. But yeah, 2k+ for a quad core? I'm pretty sure there are i5's and i7's out for laptops now.

After seeing the OP's last thread for wanting to buy a desktop, there is really no point in giving him advice. He's going to go with his initial find, pay out the ass for an overpriced piece of shit. Everyone will tell him something is better and he won't even listen.

Here's the old thread if you want a good laugh:

Seems like a nice machine. Pretty solid specs, good reviews etc. etc. Still expensive as hell though. If I were shopping for a laptop primarily for school, since you already have a home desktop, I'd get a $400 laptop with office installed.

If you want a laptop I'd just get a decent one not all super pimped out to take with to class. Gamer laptops are too clunky most of the time anyway. You aren't going to be gaming as much as you think in classes and the ones where you can it's just as good as not going.

At least in my opinion if you already have an awesome desktop getting an awesome laptop is a waste of money but if you have the money to piss away and would rather spend it at that then elsewhere then go for it.

I'm not hell bent on the alienware, I'm not in a rush this time. I've sence returned the desktop and got a better one. As far as the laptop I'm just asking if the specs justfy the prices, I looked at the 2 recommended by members and they are ok but ugly as hell (pc is rly for gf) she like the alienware because it looks awesome

If you're not in a rush, I suggest waiting a few more months. A slew of new notebook models are supposed to be popping up from every major manufacturer with updated technologies.

I'm planning on a new notebook this year myself, so I've been reading up here and there on what to expect.

Unless you absolutely need the portability, gaming laptops are an incredible waste of money. 1. For the amount of money you'd spend, you could build an monster of a desktop system. 2. You have limited upgrade options. The desktop I use to game on is a pc I built nearly 4 years ago. I've made little upgrades over time and it runs everything beautifully. 3. Laptops are really uncomfortable to game on.

I'll talk to her about the desktop option, we have a 5 year old alienware atm but its on its last leg. Can anyone recommend a ~2k desktop for gaming (has to include mouse/speaker/keybord/monitor). She wants it to look cool like with the LEDs, kinda like the builtforpower ones on newegg.

Please don't start the whole notebook vs desktop argument again.

Are you asking for a pre-built or a custom built one? Going the custom route will give you the best bang for buck, and you can make it look how you/she wants to.

Netbook + desktop is probably cheaper than getting a "gaming" laptop... well, if you build it and stop wasting money on crap like alienware. Not like you can actually spin up the GPU on any laptop in existence without the battery dying in 2 hours, anyway.

Who needs netbook + desktop when you can have laptop + desktop gpu? http://hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=1522180

Sure, it ain't plug and play.. but if you have the means to do it and it fits your situation it can be the cheaper and more convenient alternative.
