So, this Tuesday I was a poll worker for the primary elections. I know things might be different from state to state, but here's a tip for a marginal case, but will seriously improve your experience if you fall under it.

If you sign up for a vote by mail ballot, but decide not to use it and vote at your polling place on election day, DO NOT THROW IT AWAY. The precinct roster tracks who is issued VBMs, and you need to surrender the VBM materials to cast a normal ballot. (Otherwise, you have to cast a provisional ballot, which is a huge hassle, for you AND the workers)

If you happen to lose it, and thus know you'll need to cast a provisional, don't show up in the last fucking hour the polls are open. Shit's busy then. Do it earlier.

I won't lie, odds are on the fact that you don't.

When I was in college I was the only person I knew who voted.
When I was at the pollworker training class, I was the only person my age there.
I worked my precinct all day, and nobody my age ever came in.

I guess I can take solace in the fact that after the baby boomer die off, my vote will end up wielding a ridiculous proportional influence. Truth be told though, I'd much prefer my generation participating rather than that.

Well, remember that the executive and legislative branches of the state government, while they can't go against the results of props directly, there's plenty of side channel mucking about they can do. (Like what the LA city council is doing with zoning and the dispensaries atm.)

So it would be smart to also vote not just for the prop, but also looking into and voting for politicians who will support the result in good faith.

And if you aren't already, remember to get registered to vote. You should do it ASAP, during july is best.
